DISCHARGED SOLDIERS
THE INFORMATION DEPARTMENT. The following progress statement of the work ot tho Discharged' Soldiers' Information Department as at February 6 is made available by the Minister in Charge (the Hon. A. L. Herdman):— Total number of men 011 register:—. (A.) Disposed of, 5789; (B.) Under action, 548; (C.) Not ready for action (including men returned by recent transports), •137; total, 677-1. Particulars showing how cases dealt with Cases disposed of:—(a.) Men who have work to return to, and men who have re-enlistc-d_ or returned to military duly, etc., 2-176; (b.) Men placed in employment, 1342; (c.) Men who have signed "Assistanco not required," 1289; (d.) Left New Zealand or cannot ascertain address, 154; (0.) Men who have not responded to repeated communications, and men who have - accepted work the Department found for them, but failed to start work, 528; total, 5789. Cases under action:—(a.) Reports upon cases not yet returned by officers making inquiries, 120; (b.) Awaiting furIher advice (including moil who havo stated that they aro not yet ready for work), 323; (c.) At present 011 employment wanted register, 105; total, 548. Cases not ready for action:—lfon convalescing, not ready for employment, and not yet discharged by the military authorities, 437. Grand total, 677-1.
