STATEMENT BY THE TREASURER

FIGURES FOR JANUARY

Tse monthly statements showing the comparisons of revenue and expenditure have beeoi supplied by the officeof the Hon. AiSiur i\J. Myers, Acting Minister of Finance. The figures show the revenue for the month of January, 1317, and the ten months ended January 31, 1917, as compared with that for January, 1916, and the ten months ended' January 31, 1916, respectively. The expenditure for the ten months ended January 3L, 1917, in comparison with that for the -corresponding period of tne previous year is also given, togotiler with the position of the Public •fonts Fund from April 1, 1916, to January 31, 1917. "The comparison for the month of January, 1917, with January, 1916," states Mr. Myers, "sliows a. falling-off for the 1917 period of £302,854. The chief headings -showing a decrease are stamp <hiues, income tax, and rail-waj-s. The stamp and railway reductions are_merely the ordinary fluctuations, xiie reduction in income tax will be recovered during the current month. The deficiency for the month of January is, therefore, more apparent than real. "Takfiig.- the revenue for the ten months, we. find a net increase of £740,279 for - the 1917 period, as compared with the 1916 period. The only two notable decreases are in the heading , : tax' and income tax. The land tax decrease- is due entirely to the alteration in the incidence of the mortgage tax. Considerable proportions of this reduction will bo recovered during the current month when the income tax has been paid. The whole of the decrease in the income tax win also bo recovered during tlio current month.' "Coming to the expenditure, it will he seen that the net increase in the ten months ending January, 1917, as compared -with tTie corresponding period, 1916, amounted to £931,863. Th'o chief increase is to he found nuder the heading of permanent charges, interest a™ 3 sinking fund, and under special Adts. This is accounted for by the increased interest on loan expenditure, wiar pensione and war bonus, chiefly. There is an increase of £60,771 in the expenditure of the Post and Telegraph. Department. The increased revenue, however, from this Department amouuted to £134,586 for the same period. The increase in the'lnternal Affairs expenditure is accounted for 3by the extra expenses incurred by the Government Statistician. Thero is ,»tso «u increase of £41,545 iu the expenditure of -Ehe Education Department. The Hailway Department shows s- commendable decrease in the expenditure of £130,836. whilst its revenue fSr the same period shows an increase of £340,038."' REVENUE FOB- JANUARY.
