On Wednesday morning, January 31, at Government House, Wellington. Hia Excellency the Governor, by tho Kings Commund, presented to Mrs. M. E. Cooke tho Victoria. Cross, awarded by His Majesty to her husband, the late Mvato Thomas Cooke. Sfcli Battalion, ■Vustralian Imperial , Forces, together with a letter, signed by His Majesty; and addressed to Mrs. Cooke. The Hon. Col. J. Allen, Acting-Prime; Minister an* Minister of Defence, and BrigadierGeneral Sir Alfred Kobin, Commandant of the New Zealand Military Forces, were present at tho ceremony. ■ _ Tho act. for which tho late' Private Cooke. was awarded the V.C. is described in the London Gazotto of September 8, 1916, as follows;— . "For most conspicuous gallantry. After a Lewis gun had booh disabled, he was ordered to taUo his gun and gunteam to a dangerous part of the line. Here lie did too work, but camo under very heavy fire, with the result that finally he was tho only man left. So still stuck to his post, and continued to fire his gun. When- assistance was eent he was found dead beside his gun. He set a splendid examplo of - determination and devotion to dwy.
