IKENTHAM WITHDRAWS FROM THE COIIPETITION.
The Wellington Cricket Association met last evening. Mr. C. G. Wilson presided, and there wore present also Messrs. A. A. George, F. A. Midlane, V. B. Willis, M. J. Crombie, and Howitt. The City Council wrote, stating that the association's application for permission to charge for admission to. the Basin Reserve on February 8 and 10 had been granted. Tho Trentham Camp Cricket Club forwarded an explanation as to their failure to fulfil a fixturo on January 20. The club said that a difficulty over train transit was the reason. The communication added that owing to tho difficulties encountered in a camp' liko . Trentham the team would forthwith withdraw from tho competition. >It was lesolvcd to accept tho resignation with regret, and to thank the Camp Commandant aricT tho Camp Adjutant for the assistance they had , given the Cricket Association. Applications to transfer Maclrio and Anderson, of the North Club, from the senior to tho junior ranks were granted. In viow of the defaults of /the Trentham team, three-point wins were awarded to North, University, and Old Boys. ' The TrenthaWUniversity fixture set down for tho coming Saturday will, of course, not be played. The Tetone-Old Boys match will be played on the Basin Reserve on Saturday. The Queen of Rumania is a splendid horsewoman, and tho greatest contrast imaginable ,to her mother-in-law, Carmen Sylva, who liked nothing better than to sit over her embroidery. The present Queen, however, ahd a narrow escape on one of her excursions on horseback. She was riding among .the Carpathians when a storm overtook her,- and her horse, terrified by tho lightning, ran away., . It made etraight for a precipice, but its rider kept her head, and managed to slip off just in time, while the horse was dashed to pieces. While so much is being written about the Queen of Rumania and her many sorrows, it is interesting to note that her sister, the Grand Duchess Cyril (the second daugh, ter of the late Duke of Edinburgh) is, with her two daughters, making frequent visits to the Petrograd hospitals and giving concerts for the men. The Second Country Day at the Welington Red Cross Shop takes place on Friday,.February 2. Tko Kapiti Red Gross- District, comprising Waikanae, Paraparaumu, and Paekakariki, havo determined to make their second day as successful as the first, and will continue to supply country produce of the very best at the ordinary market price ruling in Wellington. There will be fresh amb and pork, and a fine selection of dressed poultry, vegetables of all kinds, fruit in • quantities, including grapes, fine early table apples, and a few Capo gooseberries—the p first of the season. There will be cakes of all kinds, including home-made bread, Scotch; shortbread and hrandysnaps, and Yorkshire parkin. A fine quantity of fresh cream, pasteurised, but without preservative of. any sort, is to be offered to the buyerson the arrival of tho midday train from the country. This is a unique chance to get cream in tho City from the morning's milk. Fresh eggs, chutney, plum sauce, honey in the comb, mint, jelly are only a few of tho attractions that the ladies' offer.
