RETURNED SOLDIERS
. , 9- . She men w hospitals. . During the week ended January 22, &ome 276 'returned soldiers wero reifceiving treatment in hospitals in. this teountry, 231 as in-patients and .Co as /out-patients. More than half of tlio men wero in institutions under the 'direct control of the Government, at SBotorua, Devonport, Lowry Bay, ■ and Hannior. Twenty-two of. the' men. wero fin consumption sanitaria. Iu quoting thoso figures .yesterday, fliie Jfinistor of Public Health (Hon. ,G. W. Russell) said that in , addition to the soldiers there were Tio fewer, than 134 discharged men who wero -receiving hospital treatment, and HO who wero being treated as out-patients. Ho regretted to say that 23 of tho discharged mou ; \vero inmates of the consumption, sanitoria. The disohargo of a soldier, it may he mentioned, doos not mean that the Government accepts no. further responsibility. The Defence Department may igive a. man his discharge as a member of the Forces, and at tho same time refer his case to tho Public Health I)c- ---! partniant, and assist him in placing :his claim before tho Pensions Depart'went. The discharged soldier continues to receive treatment at the cost of tho •State as bug as he is suffering from ihe. effects of active service.
