PULVERISED COAL
"Between Chicago and Milwaukee the Chicago and North-western Railway Company pbiccil in service a year ago a passenger locomotive equipped for burning pulverised coal. It has been thoroughly tested in active service, and has demonstrated ii marked saving in fuel. According to tests published in the "Railway Age Gazette," this locomotive evaporated 13 per cent, mors water per nound of coal and consumed 18 per cont. less coal on the runs between Chicago and ■ Milwaukee, than was rer(uired with a similar locomotive fired with lump coal in the ordinary manner. Moreover, a much cheaper grade of coal \ttis n>ed on the locomotive burning tmlrertad coal. Tn firing up the cold locomotive only 7501b. of nowdcred coal were required, as against ITflfllb. of lump coal. But an even "renter point in favour of powdered con! is the ability to shut off tho fire entirely while standing; still. Thus, tho fire can bo entirely shut off for about half an hour, yet in five minutes after it is started again the boiler is up to full pressure. The coal is fed into tho fire-box by a Mast, and gives a smokeless flame.
