THE FIXING OF PRICES
VIEWS OF BUSINESS MEN
London, January 2d. The Associated- Chambers of Commerce discussed the. fixing of prices, and adopted a. resolution calling the attention of Mr. K. E. Prothoro, Minister for Agriculture, to the hardship of fixing prices for the potato crop for 1916, after quantities had been already sold at higher .prices. It was pointed out that purchasers at £15 to £16 per ton now found the Government price to bo £10. Farmers wanted fair play. A further resolution urged that a minimum ■ price for wheat and oats should bo assured for at least four years, with four years' notice of withdrawal. A delegate pointed out that the world's price for wheat would possibly roaoh £5 por quarter, and the British producer would be in a sorry position if the price were fixed at £3. Mr. Stonier, the chairman, declared that the Government's delay in fixing a minimum had resulted in the neglect to cultivate hundreds of .acres suitable for wheat. ' A resolution was adopted deploring the calling up of farm lmnds before suitable substitutes had been obtained. —Au6.-N.Z- Gable Assn^
