AGRICULTURE AND THE COLOURS
CONFLICTING CLAIMS
(Rec. January 25, 8.10 p.m.) London, January 24. Lord Derby, Minister for -War, and Mr. R. E. Prothero, Minister for Agriculture, state that tlio urgent military situation requires tho taking of mon under twenty-five, even from an industry so essential as agriculture; on tho other hand agriculture asks for the return of all its skilled labour. The conflicting claims are only reconcilable if tho soldier and the farmer each yields something. Instead of tho sixty tbousaml offered by tho tribunal as beiu"unessential, only thirty thousand will bo called up without tho War Cabinet's sanction. The military authorities have arranged substitutes wlio will include a proportion of those skilled in the management of horses. They will also return from the colours those accustomed to the steam cultivator andseud other men to assist in ploughing and sowing, thus assuring a volume of labour exceeding that of the past eight months.—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn.-Eeu-tor.
