WAR PENSIONS
THE PRESENT POSITION
Tho AVar Pensions Board has dealt with 3883 claims from soldiers and 2227 from dependants sinco it- began its operations under the Act of 1915. Of the soldeirs, 9*lo have been granted pensions, and 2569 allowances; 357 claims liavo been refused, 8 adjourned, mid 9 are 011 hand. Of the dependants, 1805 liavo been given pensions and 190 allowances; 195. claims liavo been refused, 11 adjourned, and 26 are 011 hand. Out of.more than 6000 men discharged, therefore, only 3883 have applied for pensions, and iu icspect of over 5000 deaths, the dependants' claims number only 2227 (not including 601 children, wlio.se claims are not sop; arately stated). Tho annual values of pensions and allowances are as under: Soldiers' pensions, 910, £49,397 '(averago £52); widows and wives (including 601 children), 397, £38,782 (average, £97); other dependants' pensions, 140S, £40,437 (average, £28); allowances, 2759, £149,224 (average, £54). Totals,. 5504. £277,840 (average, £50). The. grand total does not represent the present actual charge, since some 800 case's involving ail annual payment of £40,000 have been removed from the roll owing to deaths and other circumstances. The net liability of the Dominion for war pensions, therefore, amounts to £237.840 per-annum. ■
