POLICE CASKS. Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided over ;; sitting of tnc Magistrate's (Jourt yesterday. Tnomns Ueeves, thrico previously convicted of insobriety within tho spate of six months, was again convicted, and sentenced to ono month's imprisonment with hard labour.
Herbert Butts, a lad of 17, pleaded guilty to a charge of fraudulently converting to his own use a. cheque for £3 10s. The cheque, it appeared, was entrusted to tho accused by a fellow-em-ployee on a sheep station and was to have boon delivered to tho la-tter's wifo in Wellington, it was alleged for the defence that the accused had fallen in with companions who had caused him to spend the money. "Yours was tho aot of a thorough young blackguard," said His Worship to accused. "I don't want to send you to gaol, and I shall sivo you -a chanco to reform. You will bo convicted and ordered to como up for sentenco when called'up to do so." CIVIL CASES. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided over tho civil business in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. JUDGMENT SUMMONSES. Orders were made against tho following:—P. Sullivan to pay 15. J. Johansson £4 9s. 7d. by monthly instalments of Ss.; John Oakhurst to pay Joseph T. Lowis £9 Us. 6d. by February 1, in default nine days in gaol; J. H. Wright to pay Harry Baker £i 17s. by February 1, in default four days'' in gaol; W. G. Thompson to pay E. J. Tennent and J5. B. Tennent, £11 Os. Bd. by February. 1, in default ten days in gaol.
