Silver Wedding. Last Wednesday evening Mr. and Mrs. John Ellis, of Hereford Street, Palmerston North, tendered a social evening to their friends on the occasion of their silver wedding. There, -was a very largo attendance of friends of the family, including tho Mayor and Mayoress, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Nash. A mimbcr oC toasts were honoured, including tho health of the brido and bridegroom, which was proposed by the Mayor, who referred to tho sterling qualities of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis as citizens and friends. Ho also alludod to Mr. Ellis's long connection with Friendly Societies'in Palmerston, and spoke in tho. highest terms of praise of Mrs. Ellis and her daughter. Mr. Ellis, on behalf of Mrs. Ellis, Miss Eilis, and himself, suitably responded.
"Our Day" Appeal, His Excellency tho Governor has rereived the following cable message from Lord Lansilowne:—"Please accept and communicate to all concerned our most <rrateful thanks for tho magnificent contribution from tho Dominion in response to 'Our Day , appeal."
Gifts to Soldiers. Twenty-one soldiers from the AVairarapa, who are on tho strength of the Twenty-first Reinforcements, attached to the Artillery, Mounted ltiiles, and Specialist Company, paraded at tho Soldiers' Club, Featherston Military Camp, on Tuesday last, to receive gifts at the hands 01 the Mastcrton and Featlierston ladies. Each, man received socks, a- balaclava, shaving soap and brush, and a safety razor, and as he was handed his parcel ho was wished tho best of good luck by all the ladies. Tho men signified their appreciation of the gifts, heartily cheering the ladies and the society. Second-Lieutenant Jackson, of MastertosK who is also going to tho front, received similar gifts.
Dance at Anzac Club. There was a record crowd at the Anzac . Club, Featherston, on Tuesday night, when the Ladies' Committee of the Wairarapa Patriotic Society entertained tho officers and men of tho Twenty-second Reinforcements at a dance. The Reinforcement leaves camp for the march over the hill to Trentham on Thursday morning, and tho men wore consequently granted leave, closo upon 600 of them accepting the committee's invitation to attend the entertainment. The hostesses for tho evening were Mesdaines W. E. Bidwill, W. J. Martin, G. Pain, and W. Hume. The dance music was provided by tho Camp Military Band, under Bandmaster Wicks, and extras were played by Miss Hodder and Mrs; Wiekcns. Tho floor was at all times crowded, as partners for the' ,men. were plentiful, a number of Mastcrton Carterton ladies having made tho journey to Featherston to assist the local committee. Supper was served at about ten o'clock and dancing was continued until eleven, o'clock.
The Misses Wenlcy, of Hawko's Bay, who sailed for England somo timo since, aro now helping at the Now Zealand Hospital at Walton-on-Thames.
Mr. and Mr. Lionel Abraham, who aro staying at Packakariki, paid a flying visit to town on Wednesday.
Mrs. Tom Cameron and Miss Cameron are motoring'to Glendlm, on tho East Coast, and will bo away about ten days.
Miss Gladys Grant, of Woodville, is staying with Mrs. Lionel Nelson, of Karori.
ytfrs. Veitch, whoso husband l leffc in tho last transport, is leaving for England by tho next steamer.
Tho first weekly meeting this year of tho New .Zealand Natives' Association Ladies' Guild , was held at the Natives' Hall on Tuesday evening. Mrs. M'Vicar / was in tho chair. Somo new members tvero elected, and it is quite evident members will be kept exceedingly busy for somoimonths to come. The guild will bo in charge of the Red Cross Shop in Woodward Street to-dav.

•A big success was achieved by Mr. L. W. Hanlon at his concert given at tho Friend Society-last night.Recitals, songs, and instrumental pieces wore of a high order, and wore demanded again. Men from ships in port took part by sending up some good storjos that caused great laughter. Mr. Moore, missioiier, thanked those who had made provision for a day's enjoyment for tho men on Monday. The perforators were: F. Eutner, Tabor, St John, M, Kutncr, H. Kutner, and Messrs Hanlon, Clements,, and Haincs.

A Mess Dinner. A complimentary dinner was given tho olliccTS of tho Twenty-second Iteinforccincnts at tfio l''cathcraton mess on Tuesday oveniug hist. Tho head-, quarters and instructional stall's were present, including Colonel Adams (Camj> Commandant), Major Ncwcombc, and Captain Silcock (Adjutant and Assistant Adjutant respectively), Colonel MacDonnld (Chief Infantry Instructor), and Major Siveotzer (Assistant Instructor).' Tho health of tho reinforcement was proposed by Colonel N. P. Adams, who said that us a reinforcement it hold its own with any that had passed through the camp. Captain J. Kcir returned tlianks for tho compliment paid the officers and men. Ho spoke enthusiastically of tho instruction imparted at both camps, and pointed to the transformation effected in three or four months from raw material to the capable, trained, and disciplined soldier, credit for -which was duo to the instructional staff—officers who themselves were burning to get away to the front, but found they could not owing to their value at home. He thanked tho headquarters staff for their unfailing courtesy, for which all ranks were very grateful. Anyone two or three years ago would have scouted the idea that such great military institutions as our camps, with their wonderful systems, were possible in so small a country as New Zealand. The gathering closed with cheers for tho reinforcement.. •
St. John Ambulance Workrooms, The members of tho South i.nd Morth Divisions of the Ambulanco Brigade aro now comfortably installed in their new quarters. The upper rooms of tho StarBoating Club shed, and a. lower cue,' where tho heavy cases are made up arid stored, have been lent to tho brigado by tho Star Moating Club. Tho antral workroom upstairs is largo, cool, and airy. Tho workers hero have already dispatched a consignment to headquarters, and next week there will be another. Everyono is working hard to make up for time lost during the holidays. The new grey aprons and cops look very smart and businesslike. In these new rooms thero will be plenty of space for more workers, who will be cordially welcomed by Mosdamcs I'cat and Preston and their helpers. Ladies who are visitors to town, and wio are interested in patriotic work, will bo shown round the ; workrooms at any time. Mcsctames Peat and Preston thank Mr. King for painting some very fine signs for the brigade, and also Mr. Shepply (of Cocks and Co.), for his gift of a handsome clock. £5-1 has been received from tho Petone branch, £24 of which were tho proceeds of the Gear Company's picnic.

Miss Una Carter has resumed her gas-cookery demonstrations at the Gas Company's Rooms in Courtonny Place. Every Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock quite a number of ladies meet and upend an hour with Miss Carter, who explains and demonstrates how to uso a gas cooker to the best advantage. Yesterday tho "menu" was composed of "request" dishes, none of which had been handed in the week previous, and included scrambled fish and rice, coffee rolls, rice biscuits, orange shortbread and lemon tartlets. Thero will another demonstration next "Wednesday.
A mosfc enjoyable entertainment was provided in the Y.M.C.A. Hall, Trentliam Military Camp, on Wednesday night, by a concert party which consisted of Miss Mina Caldow, Mrs. Lux, Miss N. Simpson and Miss D. Varney. The hall was filled and the excellent programme ~was generously applauded. The party was subsequently entertained at supper at tho officers' mess.
A substantial donation to the Y.M.C.A. Trench Comforts' Fund has been made through the energy of Miss D. Aitkinson, of Kilbimie, and a number of helpers, amongst whom Miss Cromlne was most prominent. ■ They organised the "Chrystal Queen Operetta" with such success that two entertainments yielded."the net amount of £13. los., which has been duly forwarded to tho National Secretary .of the Y.M.C.A. and acknowledged with thanks. . .' ~■
I Ifriends.'of .the.E-ed.Cross arc reminded that tho Wellington Red Cross Shop on Lambtoii Quay will have a full supply of good things for sale today. Tile Now Zealand Natives' Asso-. ciiition will bo in charge and stock tho shop, and thoy aro working hard for the success of the day. It is expected there will bo tbo \isual generous responso from tho public, and another largo weekly sum'bo added to tho fund for our sick and wounded soldiers in England. Thcro will bo the usual splendid display of flowers, and those who mako si specialty of houso and table decorations arq asked to como and buy, and in so doing help tho good cause. Tho following Friday (January 2G) the shop will bo in chargo of and stocked by tho Spinsters' Chib, and a big day is expected. Tuesday (January 30) will bo taken by tho Wollington Women's National Reserve. Very great interest is also being taken in tin's day, and all aro,vory keen to have- a most successful Red Cross Day.
