WORK FOR EX-OPFICERS
SCHEME TO AID THE EDUCATED BUT UNTRAINED. An. employment bureau for discharged officers has been organised by the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce. The scheme was the outcome of a suggestion mado by Lord Derby, -who recently drew the attention of the Chamber to the difficulty, which confronted many officers discharged from service, who had no immediate prospect of employment before them. Whilst many of theso young men had not qualified* for any career before. Ho joned tho Army, a number, possibly owing to physical disability sustained -while on service, arc. no longer fitted for tho vocation for which they were- preparing. Mr. A. Sydney; Watson, one of the honorary secretaries of the organisation sub-committeo of the Bureau, recentlyexplained tho scheme to a "Daily News" representative. The difficulty, , ho said, that tho Bureau sot out to 1 meot is iypified by tbocaso, say, of <i medical student who had lost an arm. This_ disability possibly precludes .bin continuing a medical career, but as a man of education he might very well mako a successful commercial traveller. Ib is -understood, of course, that eni- | ployers -would havo to bo prepared to give- somo training to the. men. At the end.of tho war, when tho permanent employees returned to reclaim their jobs, these men would havo gained sufficient .esporionco to look after themselves in the ordinary labour market.
