Following tho transfer of tho head office of tho Commonwealth, and Dominion Lino, ltd., from Napior to Wellington, it has been arranged that tho steamers of that lino shall bo consigned alternately to Messrs. W. M. Bannatyne and Co., ltd., and to tho Commonwealth, and Dominion line, Ltd. Tho joint agency takes effect as from January 1.

IUVEEINA FROM SYDNEY. Tho HuddartrParker, Ltd., advise that tho Rivcrina—next week's Sydney boatleft >Syduoy at noon on Thursday, and is duo hero early on Monday morning. She has 196 passengers and 937 tons ot cargo for Wellington, and also carries Australian and English, via Suez, mails. The Riveriim leaves for Lyttelton on Tuesday evening at 5 o'clock, returning and leaving again for Sydney direct on Thursday. SERVICE FROM JAPAN. Advico lias been received from Messrs. 11. Millar and Co., of Auckland, agents for the Osaka Sliosou Kaisha, that the Nanking Ma.ru, now on her way to Vladlvostock, •will load there and in Japan for ' New Zealand ports. The steamer is expected to arrivo in Auckland in Marcli. KOKIR-I FROM NEWCASTLE. The Union Company advise that tho Kokiri should leave Newcastle with. coal for Wellington about Tuesday or Wednesday next. HINEMOA IN PORT. Shortly before noon yesterday tho Government steamer Hinemoa arrived in port from her periodical visit round the Strait lighthouses. Visits were made at Picton and Nelson, and all tho lights and a number of -buoys wero overhauled at different places. Before coming up to tho wharf a call was made at Somes Island. Mr. G. Allport, Secretary for Marine, advises that the vessel will leave here on Wednesday for her quarterly trip round tho southern lighthouses. SILTING AT GISBORNE. The Union Company havo been advised that in consequence of heavy continuous rain at Gisborne the river is charged with silt. It is now some months since the company's steamer Arnhura has been unable to berth' at tho Gisborno wharf on account of the river shoaling. The Arahnra is tendered in the roadstead the same as the other passenger steamers calling there. FIRE ON WAUQEIIW. The Union Company's steamer Waimarino arrived in Auckland from San Francisco at noon yesterday. A Press Association message from Auckland with reference to tho cargo of copra which was destroyed by o, fire caused by combustion in No. 4 hatch, which, was reported by cablo from Vancouver on November 14, says:—"After tho fire which occurred on tho Waimarino at San Francisco It was found necessary to place additional supports under tho 'tween decks in the lower holds to keep up the weight where stanchions had buckled. The vessel's hull sustained no damage, and she now shows no traces of Arc." ■ RECORD VOYAGE BY GOGOVALE. A record voyage from New York to WelUngtou and probably to A'ew Kiealanu was completed by tho arrival in Wellington yesterday afternoon of the Gogovale, from New York, via Panama, alter a voyage of exactly 33 days. Shortly alter tne Canal was opened a vessel made tho voyage to Auokland in about 37 days. The Gogovalo is, however, on her maiden voyage, and put up a fast passage, averaging very slightly under eleven inoU an hour for tho voyage. She was buut in 1916 by Greenock and Co., and her owners .are Messrs. Crawford, Barr and' Co. She is a steel vessel, and essentially a cargo carrier, with, all the latest devices for the quick handling of cargo. Her tonnags is 5600, and her principal dimensions are: Length. 410 feet, breadth 53 feet, and depth 28 feet. Sho is fitted with, wireless, and is registered at Glnsgow. Sho loft New York on December 2, about noon, and experienced good weather to Colon, where she arrived at 5.50 a.m. on December 10. She coaled and passed through tho Canal on the same day, discharging her pilot at 8.20 p.m. Most ot the trip aoross the Paciflo was in bad weather, and when about three days out of Wellington the weather culminated In a hurricane. Heavy fog was experienced some time, and heavy seas continually broke on the vessel. No damage, however, resulted. She has a general cargo for Wellington. I Captain Steele, late of the Gryfevale, is in command, and has associated with him: —Chief officer, Mr. T. K. Scott; second, Mr. D. M'Lood; third. Mr. K. M'lvor; chief engineer, Mr. W. M'Millan; second, Mr. Henderson; third, Mr. Davidsoni fourth, Mr. Campbell; radio operator, Mr. 3. Marsh. After completing discharge at WoUington the Gogovalo proceeds to Auckland. MUSS-TABLE GOSSIP. Captain R. n. Harvey, of the Torres Straits pilot service, died at Woolstonccraft, Sydney, after a brief illness. Captain Harvey came to Australia in tho old A.S.N, liner Eockton, and traded on tho Queensland coast for some years. He afterwards commanded tho New Guinea Government yacht, Merrie England, and on leaving that vessel joined the pilot service. Ho had been In the service for about twelve years, and successfully piloted a. of steamers through the straits, his last vessel being the Nankins Maru. He leaves a widow and family of three sons and one daughter. One. of his sons Is an officer in the Australian Steamshins Line.

Mr. Morrison, engineer of the Waverlcy, is to come ashore- on a weok's sick leave. Mr. Robinson -will replace him. Tilr. I>. Jones has Joined the Paloona as third mate.

The Auckland-owned steamer Ihumata is due at Lyttelton to-morrow or Monday from Olarcnco Itiver, Tia Oamaru, with a cargo of timber. After discharging at Lyttelton tho Ihumata takes a general cargo from that port to Auckland. Delay was cansed to tho departure of tho coastal steamer Orcpuki at Lyttelton on Tuesday owing to a member of the crew not turning up. The Oropuki is dua here to-day from Timaru and Lyttelton, and leaves at noon to-day for Nelson, Takaka, Tcrakoho, and Xydia Bay.

Tho Westport Goal Company's Canopua came out of dock at Lyttelton on Wednesday after having her tall thoroughly overhauled. She should leave this -weekend for the West Coast. It is understood that Captain M. Sollars has been reappointed to tho permanent command ol tho vessel, vice Captain Venn.

Too late to catch the early tide yesterday morning, tho Karori arrived at Wanganui from Wellington. It was expected that the vessel -would got in to Wangamrt to discharge South Australian cargo at tho 7 o'clock tide last evening.

Tho Ngahero calls at Wellington on Sunday en route from Grey mouth to Whan garei with coal. Tho vessel leaves this port for Whangarei on Tuesday.

Tho Kini loft Westport yesterday -morning with a full load of coal for Wellington, where she is due this morning. On completion of discharge 6he proceeds to Greymouth.

Tho Paloona, which, made a special trip to Lyttelton, is due hero this morning, and will receive cargo until 10.30 a.m. for Hobart and Melbourne, for which ports sho leaves at 5 p.m; to-day.
