He says the statement that the belligerents have similar objectives is wickedly faise'and misleading, and profoundly immoral. 1 Germany trampled the Belgians under her heel, and is transporting them to serve in a .state of slavery ,in Germany; yet the President dared not say one word on behalf of Belgium. During the debate in the United States Senate, Senator Lodge, one of tho most influential Senators, continued his opposition to tho endorsement of President Wilson's Note. "The belligerents," be said, "ought to make their own peace. I believe Mr. Lansing was sincere . when he said tho Note was not issued becauso the United States was iieariiig the verge of war.
