MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Captain W. H. Henna h and Mr. D. Keir, J.P.'s, presided over yesterday morning's sitting of tho Magistrate's Court.

Bartholomew Mahoney was fined 10s., with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment, on his sixth conviction within six months for insobriety.

Dennis Beardon, whom Sub-Inspector M'Kinnon described to the court as "a thorough blackguard," appeared on charges of disorderliness while drunk, use of obscene language, and causing damage to a policeman's helmet. On the first charge ho was fined 55., and on tho third 10s. Gd. In connection with tho charge of vising obscene language, Captain Hennali said to the accused: "There is ono thing we are determined to do, and that is tc- Keep the streets as clean as possible- of obscene language. We will not give you the option of a fine, but will sentence you to three months' imprisonment." On charges of using obscene language in the Basin. Reserve, and of resisting a policeman in the execution of. his duty, Patrick Oatcs was remanded for one week, tho presiding justices remarking that the accused appeared to be in a dazed condition, and unaware of what was proceeding. Martin Coogan, 73 years of age. was charged with heinc; an idle and disorderly person, without sufficient lawful means of support. Sub-Inspector M'Kinnon explained that tho accused's was not a caso for imprisonment, but that the authorities in charge of the Ohiro Home, from which the accused had persistently escaped, had refused to take him had:. James Deans was remanded to Hastings on a charge of having there stolen, in June, 1909, a hay goldinp. valued at £11, tho property of Joseph Genty.
