ALLEGED MURDER AT, WAIPAWA
OLD AGE PENSIONER ARRESTED.
Advice of the arrest of a inan on s charge of murder at Waipawa was telegraphed to Commissioner O'Donovan at \Velliugton yesterday. The arrested man is Patrick' Kiely, and he is charged with the murder on Saturday night of a man named George' Dodd by_ cutting his throat. Kiely is an old age pensioner, and has lived in a "mimi" on the hank of the river near Waipawa for some time past. Recently two "swaggers" camped close to Kiely. The men were George; Dodd! and Joseph Wainwright. The latter reported to the police at Waipawa yesterday morning that his mate had been killed by Kiely. It is alleged that Kiely went to the other men's camp and attacked Dodd with a knife and cut his throat, and that Wainwright went to his mate's assistance and was also wounded in several places, though not seriously. The police found Dodd in. the condition described, and later arrested Kiely. The three men, it is stated, were on the best of terms on Saturday afternoon. The motive of the crime was'not communicated to Wellington. , . An inquest will bo held at Waipawa at 10 a.m. to-day.
