VERDICT OF NOT GUILTY IN HAWKE'S,BAY CASE, In the Supreme Court yesterday, before His Honour Mr. 'Justice Hosking, the trial of Sydney Martell, late manager of the Hawke's Bay Fruit, Produce, and Cold Storage Company, Ltd., who was charged with having stolen, on May - 25, 1915, the sum of £100, in June of the same year the sum of £15, and between January and May, 1915, various amounts totalling £24 16s. Id., was concluded. In summing up His Honour said tho case was capable of being determined on the correspondence, and the question whether at the meeting of directors of the company a discussion took place which left an impression on the mind of the accused that-he was to get a salary of £450, and that his refusal to sign an agreement with respect to notice of discontinuance left that matter in abeyance. The jury, after a retirement of about two hours, returned a verdict of not guilty on each of the three charges, and it was intimated on behalf of the Crown that tho further counts in tho indictment would not be proceeded with. Mr. H. B.'Lusk, of Napier, appeared for the Crown, and the accused was defended by.'Sir John Findlay, TC.C.,with him Mr. J; B. Dolau, of Napier.
