NOTES AND COMMENTS

IBt Glencoe.l

Owners aro reminded that acooptances for the first day's handicaps at theWoodvillo meeting close to-morrow night at 8 [ o'clock. Entries, for all events in connection with tho Manawatu Cup meeting close with the secretary, 11 Cuba Street, Palmcrston North, at 8.30 p.m. Tm Friday next. At the time of writing tho prospects for filio weather at Feildihg to-morrow aro not bright, Big fields aro engaged in all tho events, and if the weather turns I °i't good the cluib will Kavo a record gathering. In the opening event, the Aorangi Trial Plate, tho starters will be ridden by apprentices -who havo not won five races. Trainers will experience difficulty in getting riders as tho supply does not seem to bo equal to tho deImand. Included in the likely starters aro the two Australian-bred two-year-olds, Acre and Arrowfield. The "firstnamed- showed sufficiently good form at Trentham to suggest that he should be well able to hold his own amongst maidens. Others in the race that can go fast over a short course are Mascot, Galore, and Zimmicle, but if the Fordell representative draws a good marblo there is no douibt as to which horse will be favourite. In the Flying Stakes there aro twentyone acceptors, and the whole of them are expected to go to the post. Botanist and Moutoa Queen will be penalised for their Ashhurst wins. The Trentham candidate Menelaus has been working very well at headquarters, and he may be the best supported when the machine closes. It is stated that A, Reed is. to have tho mount on the brother to Nones, but if this is so he will have to carry overweight as Reed is not likely to be able to do within four pounds of the horse's weight. The Heavy going will bo all -in favour of the light-weights in the St. Andrew's Handicap, ono mile and a half. Want (7st. 71b.) ran second in the Foilding Cup, to Orleans (7st. 131b.), tho beaten division including Rewi Poto, Master Lupin, and Leonta. Another lightweight in Master Moutoa finished just behind Welcome Nugget in the Manawatu Cup, while he defeated Orleans, a good favourite, in the Horowhcnua Cup. Ho is very well at the present time, and was noticed finishing fast in the big handicap at Trentham on the opening day. A. Reed will ride Want, and B. jffofris will 'have the mount 011 Master Moutoa. Reports froin Wanganui stato that Vladian is under a cloud, which will mean his withdrawal from the Open Hurdles. This will leave only three runners. Sir Donald and Glenorchy hail from Awapuni, and Teports state that Sir Donald is back to form, but he will probably need a race to put him on an equality with Marton, who is thoroughly seasoned. Another big field is carded for the Waituna Hack Hurdles. Record, who is now up in the weights, is spoken of as a first-rater, and though tho field is a big one, the list does not contain aqy very good horses. The Golfer' has his Gisborno and Ashhurst form to recommend him, and if Mount Victoria can be got to go off with the rest of tho field he should run well as ho is jumping better now, and the going will bo ail in his favoui|. The Feilding Stakes, five furlongs; will be tho star items of tho day. On a dry track, Crowhuirst would bo favourite, but there is a prejudice against two-year-olds in heavy going, as they do not seem to bt) able to handloi themselves as well as older horses. Against this, however, they have a big pull in tho weights, which should equalise matters. Estland finished in front of Crowhurst on a heavy track in tho Hastings Stakes, and ho may bo dangerous to-day. Bimeter is such a good horse that if tuned, up for the race lie will keep tho two-year-olds busy. Rock'oound acts well in soft going, and lie may bo up in tho fighting lino at tho finish. Orleans and Montana, the two toj>weights in the Kiwitea Welter Handicap, may start in tho St. Androw's Handicap earlier in tho day. This will reduce tho strength of tho field. Marsinoli (S. Reid) .goes a mile woll, and Cliont is another horse that is capablo of a good eight furlongs. Ladify lias ono or two fair performances to her credit over this distance, but sho is generally at her best on top of tho ground. Tho biggest field of tho day is down to compote in the Fitzroy Hack Handicap, seven' furlongs. Zola, tho topweight, is a good horse in this class, and he will find plenty of supporters to-day. Other#? that have shown winning form of lato aro Hopeito and Camp Guard.
