Helpers Wanted. Ladies aro requested to offer their assistance in the making up of verminproof shirts, which have proved themselves such a boon to our soldiers at tho front. The shirts aro all ready cut out, a lie? can be very easily made by machine, and quite pleasantly and easily by hand. Just fold up one in a handbag when you are off to tea with a friend, and in a ver-> snort time you will find .you aro running a piece of tape round the neck, and the shirt is "quito the finished article." Mrs. Ashcndcn will welcome all helpers. Hero is tho recipe for tho solution with which to impregnate them:—Stockholm tar, 1 part, mixed with 2 parts oil turpentine; add to 10 parts of riiethylated spirits. This can be diluted' with spirits, about 1 solution in 4 of methylated spirits. Soak shirts thoroughly in this. It is better to wear rubber gloves when dipping.
The Red Cross Shop. Mrs. Fletcher Reilly and Mrs. Murray Thomson, tbo promoters of the Red Cross Shop, are deserving of hearty congratulations upon tho result of their exceedingly hard work during the past three months, which has been tho means of the sum of £135 bcin" handed over to the St. John Ambulance Brigado and Red Cross Society Depot Fund. Of this sum of £135, the band of workers from Soatoun, who have charge of tho shop on Wednesdays, havo raised £50 odd, and are to be heartily thanked for having rendered suoh excellent assistance. A statement showing cadi day's takings and the small expenditure for supplies will bo found at tho shop.
A pleasant afternoon was Tapani; by a largo gathering of old AVellingten identities yesterday, the occasion beWjif 83rd birthday of Mrs. James Rlddick. The birthday was celebrated at the residence of tho guest of honour, in Molesworth Street. Mrs. Riddicfc arrived in Wellington in tho s.s. Maori in 1855, and has rosided hero since then. Many presents ;and letters of Congratulation were received from all parts of New Zealand. Owing to the final march in the City of the Nineteenth Reinforcements taking place at 3 p.m. to-day the meeting called by the Women's Committee of tho British Red Cross in the Town Hall is postponed until 4 p.m. A proposal to establish a Red Gross shop is to bo discussed, and it is hoped that all those wlio aro interested in this movement will bo present. Mrs. Vivian Riddiford, of the Hutt, is paying a visit to her mother, Mrs. Thorno George, in Auckland'. Mrs. Riddiford's children aro also in Auckland; Miss Vallance, of Masterton, and Miss Hampton, and Miss Hoskins are tho guests of Miss Chalmers. Miss Joan Hislop is staying with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Hislop, in Upper Willis Street. Mrs. M'Lean and Miss E. T. Williams, from Napier, and Miss Hardcastle, who was a passenger by the Manuka, are staying with Mrs. Facer, Hawkestonc Street. Mr. and Mrs. Iluntly Eliott, very well known and respected Wellington residents, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Monday, as they were married in Auckland on November 13, 1866, both having, been horn in Auckland. The event was celebrated quietly by a gathering of the familyat the residence of Mrs. Bucholz, of Sydney Street, one of the daughters. There were present Mr. and Mrs. Huntly Eliott, of Chrrstchurch, Mrs. Murison (Auckland), Mrs. Grove (Masterton), and Mrs. L. Wheeler (Wellington). Other members of tho family are Messrs. George and Gordon Eliott.
Friends of soldiers who aro in town will be specially welcome at the Y.W.C.A., Fowlds's Buildings, Herbert Street, this afternoon. Thoro will bo a meeting nt 3 p.m. for intercession, at which the boys on active servico will' be remembered. The meeting will adjourn to see the march past of tho troops from tho upper windows of tho Y.W.C.A., in Manners Street. At tho close of tho meeting 211 invitation cup of tea will be served. All -women and girls will bo welcome, especially thoso who have friends and relatives at tho front .
TIIO Camp Commandant at Trentham acknowledges receipt of gift of literature from Mr. F. V. Waters, G.P.0., Wellington, also the following gifts to the Hospital:—From Mr. 1Y Clark, Eskdale, case of hooks; from Women's Patriotic League, Taukau,. case of oranges.
Wellington people are fortunate in being able to hear the Kclburn Readers once again. This time they are to read in the Concert Chamber on November 24. All profits go to the Camp Entertainment Funds. Tho play is to be "What the Public Wants," by Arnold Bennett, which was produced successfullv in London in IflOi). The readers taking part are: Mr. H. E. Nicholls and Miss M. Nicholls, Mrs. Coleridge,Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin and Miss Fell. Mr. Tonks's orchestra- will assist, and Miss Shirteliffo will manage the sale of sweets and flowers.
Girls' College Sports. Next Friday is the date fixed for ths Girls' College sports. These should be even more interesting than, usual, for in addition to the sports events there j are to bo stalls for the 6alo of sweets, I flowers, produce, and cakes. During the afternoon there will be a gymnastic display by the juniors. Tim old pirls have charge of the cako and produce stall, and will be glad to receive contributions from all past pupils and friends. These contributions should be sent to the Girls' College on Thursday or Friday morning. The proceeds of the fete, including the prize money, are to be given to thc t Hed Cross Fund (St. I Dunstan's Military Hospital for the Blind) and tho Sick and Wounded Fund.

Miss Marks and Mrs. Scott will he in charge of the shop on Friday next, and will have an excellent supply of homc-mado cakes, etc.
