; BOARD OF. STUDIES MEETS. Tho second annual meeting of the Board of Studies was opened yesterday, ill the members of the board and five representatives from each, of the four colleges were present. Professor Segar presided. • Professor Easterfield made a proposal 'for the amendment of the regulations governing the grant of the Sir George Grey Scholarship. The question was referred to a sub-committee for report. It was resolved on' the motion' of Professor Brown that candidates who ■matriculate on junior scholarship papers Shall not be required again to pass, after matriculation, subjects for the Mus. B. course already taken at the scholarship examination. * JL sub-committee was set up to report on the system of marking for the matriculation examination. The question- of whether the health " 'of girls at schools suffers from overpressure v of studies was discussed. Re-ports-were before the board from the •Dimedin Recess Committee of the Senate, and from the Secondary Schools Conference. These Teports were to the ■ offect that Principals, of secondary for the education of girls did Niot admit that -ther.e was over-pressure ■likelv to be injurious to the heat-lh of ipupils. The Board of Studies passed the following/resolution:, "That the : Senate be _ recommended to make a 'tompreherisive investigation into ; question, and that, the New Zealand Branch of the B.M.'A. and the Principals of Training Colleges Tie consulted."
A list of examiners for submission jto the Senate was approved. It was .' decided that the appointment of examiners for the December examinations 'next year be left to the Senate.
. A report'of the committee on the syllabus for the degree of Bachelor 'of 'Agriculture was considered. The committee recommended statutes for amended syllabus in the science subjects. If adopted the general effect of 'ihe changes will he to make the studies for the degree bear more closely on practical .'agriculture..- './
The board divided on a motion by Professor Rankino Browne that Latin remain a Icomnulsory 'subject for- the B.A. degree. The motion was defeated by 14 votes to 5.
