New York, October 23. 15 Commander Koonig, describing the Deutchland's trip in a messago to the "New York American," says: "Early in tho morning I saw the British destroyers and ordered the engineer to submerge. The submarine dived so steep that we went down at an angle of 36 degrees and dug our bows in the mud at the bottom. Tho bows held fast and the stern was swinging violently, back and forth. As tho water was shallow I was afraid the stern would be visible. Tho ship's aft tanks wero quickly flooded, but the bows wero so deep in the mud that she only returned to the horizontal slowly. I had to do mucb. manoeuvring before the bows were releastd and we were ablo to continue our voyage."
