KOPUTAI FOR SYDNEY. An arrival in port about 4 p:in. yesterday -was the tug Koputai. recently purchased by J. .T. Daley, of Sydney, from the Otago Harbour Board. She left Duncdin on lier trip to Sydney at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The vessel fi>l a good trip up, and tho chief officer (Mt. ,T. M'Georgc) expressed an opinion last evening that, according to the run up to here, the vessel ought to go across to Sydney without any hitch. . Captain William Baillie is in charge, and has associated •with him:— Chief officer. Mr. J. M'George; chief en : giiieer, Mr. Mayne; second, Mr. Ronnie. It is understood that the Anal appointment!. foT the trip have not yet been made. Captain P. Dunn, representing the Sydney firm, is also travelling on the -vessel. It is estimated that the little paddle-wheeler steamed at the rate of 10 knots an hour coming up tho Victoria Channel on Monday. She goes to Shelly Bay this morning to load explosives, and will then go on to New Plymouth to fill up her bunkers before leasing New Zealand finally. The vessel has been rigged so that 6ho can proceed under sail to Sydney, andher engines will only be used in case of necessity. According to the "Otago Daily Times," about £1500 has been spent, on the Koputai since she it* purchased from tho Otago Harbour Board. SOMERSET DELAYED. The Union Company odviso that the cargo steamer Waltomo. from Calcutta, left' Bombay on September 28 for Auckland and Wellington. She' may bo expected in Auckland about Tuesday or Wednesday, and at Wellington about a week later. AEBAH-NA-POGTJE SAFE. ,■ Advices from tho north state that' the schooner Arrah-na-Poguo, which has been causing some anxiety lately on account of her non-appearance in Hokianga after nearly 40 days' voyage from Wellington, has arrived safely at Hokianga, and piok-. Ed up a cargo of 202,000 feet of timber. She left Hokianga for Auckland on Tuesday last The reason for her lengthy trip was the heavy weather encountered on tho West Coast, and she had to shelter for several days at.Guard's Bank. Tho 'vessel should each Auckland, judging by the present conditions, about Tuesday next, and will later go inio dock. Captain Somorvillc. sou of the owner, is in" charge of tho Arrah-na-Poguc. LARGEST GABBIER AFLOAT. • An Italian builder has recently launched tho largest cargo-carrier trading on tho seas. This Is tho Navigazoio Generate Italiana. liner Milazzo. She is moro peculiar and striking in appoaranco than any ship to bo scon on the ocean on account of the twenty tall steel shafts -which tower high abovo her dcoks. Engineering contrivances comprise a new. soheme for the rapid loading and unloading of the enormous cargo which the ship carries. ...She lias a cargo capacity of 14,000 ton 6. is, 512 Teet in length, and has a breadth of beam of 65.8 feet, and a moulded depth of 33.8 feet. When loaded her displacement is 20,040 tons, and with a quadruple expansion engine of 4000 horse-power. She steams at tho rate of 11 knots.

The ship is primarily' designed for the currying of coal, grain,- or similar bulk cargo. On cither side of the. centre of the ship nre tunnels, each with two tracks kid. On these' tracks small cars travel until elevator shafts are reached, from which elevators lead to the upper deck. The cars, loaded'-with freight, arc carried by these elevators to-si height from which they can be emptied into smaller vessels alongside the Jtilazzo or on the pier. The roofs of the tunnels in tho hold aro slanting, and feed tho cargo, through small openings, to tho c«ts on tho tracks, so that it may he conveyed to tho elevators for discharge. So efficient has this system hecn proved that it is possible to rinload tho cargo of 14.000 tons on tho Milazzo in 48 honrs. with a, great diminution of the-man labour, reelaired for tho unloading of tho ordinary ship. The Milazzo has twenty of those elevators and shafts used for loading and unloadimg. Another advantage secured by the new design of construction is that, because of the slanting sides of the shin's holds, tho cargo, when taken on board, practically stows itself. The Volturno, a sister ship, of the Milazzo, is to be launched at Spczzia, Italy, in a few weeks' time. - /
