EDUCATION BOARD

YESTERDAY'S MEETING. ■5 . Tho Wellington Education Board met yesterday. There wore present: Tho Hon. J. G. W. Ailkcn (in the chair), Messrs. W. Allan, R. A. Wright, M.P., W. 11. Field, M.P., T. Forsyth, A. W. Hogg, T. Moss, E. P. Rishwortli, G. London, E. H. Penny, A. Mackav, and J. Kebhell. Tho New Zealand Educational Institute wrote suggesting that simultaneous meetings of the education boards should be held, as that would be of great convenience in regard to vacancies and general matters affecting teachers. The board did not consider the idea practicable. A letter _ was read from tho Minister of Education asking that teachers should report .cases of children deemed to bo mentally deficient. It was decided to proceed with the erection of a classroom to increase the accommodation "at the Lansdowne School. Tho school, /which is in the Masterton district, has been short of accommodation for some time. Tho Education Department replied, in reference to communications about certain delayed siibsidies, that the whole question of subsidies on Trust Lands Trust grants was under consideration.

The Finance Committee authorised repairs rendered necessary by the Tecent heavy gales at Jolmsonville, EketaI huna, Shannon, and Canvastown (Marlborough). Alterations were also authorised at Pctone West. It was agreed to subsidise the efforts of the South Wellington Committee in grading the playground. The Department further notified that it was unable to purchase additional grouncl at the Terrace School. Tenders were accepted as under:— Petono, asphalting, S. O'Brien; Upper Hutfc, septic tank, F. H. Lukins; Levin, septic tank, J. Harvey; Pirinoa, residence, E. A. King. Miss Stephens was appointed assistant at Parkvale. A deputation from the Kilbirnie Committee waited upon the board to convey the committee's assent to the proposal to transfer a section of the Kilbirnie school district to the Roseneath district.
