Cift Parcels. A large number of messages gratefully acknowledging the. receipt of pareels forwarded to New Zealand soldiers at the front, under, tlio Dominion gift scheme, have been .received by the Auckland Women's Patriotic League, of which the Mayoress, Mrs. J. IJ. Gunson, is the president. Ono soldier writes as follows"The contents uf the parcel sent by you wero very much appreciated by the members of my company. The parcel arrived in very good ordor and condition, which vrfts, without doubt, due to your excellent system of packing. There was also little delay in delivery. AVe are all very proud of the manner in which the women of New Zealand are working in order to further our comfort and welfare while in the trenches. AVe are all agecd that your gifts from timo to time have cheered many a sad heart and' brought forth tender memories of homo after a severe and ®trying day's work in the trenches." There, are many similar messages. Entertainment at the Returned Soldiers' Club. Returned soldiers and their friends wero present in considerable numbers yesteruay afternoon at the Returned Soldiers' Club, when some of tho members of the Allan Wilkie Shakespeare Company gavo a most enjoyable entertainment, assisted by one or two AVellington friends of the soldiers. As a preliminary to tho entertainment, Mr. A. S, •Biss, who has been elected chairman of the society, extended a very hearty welcome .to the visiting members of the comrjany, and spoke of the benefit which such entertainments were to. men who had gone through the stress and strain of war. Through this club the men who for various reasons had not been ablo to go to the war, by reason of old age or through disabilities of various kinds, had an opportunity of showing how muoh they valued what these men had done, by taking a practical interest in its concerns, and-for the next twelve months, while he was chairman, lie intended to do all he could for it. Civilian interest in its alFairs was a necessary thing to have. The members of tho Shakespeare Company who contributed to the . programme (which had boon arranged by Miss Norruys) were: Mr.. Ke'hoe, who sang; Mr. John Cave, who recited "Tho Day," and also gave an excerpt from "Tho Widow O'Brien" (delightfully given).; and Miss llutli Norreys, who recited a, poem of Bilaire Belloc's. These performers were.all greatly appreciated, and wero brought back two or three times. ■ Mr. Woodward also contributed several songs, as' well as playing all tho accompaniments, and Mr: Bentley Russell gavo pathetic, little Italian sketch, iolloivud by a. couple of contrasting anecdotes.' Tli thanking the performers /for their very pleasant 'entertainment, Mr. Biss stated that'tlio Allan Wilkie Company had for every performance in Wellington reserved seats for returned, soldiers, matinees, and all. Hearty cheers for their entertainers were given by the soldiers, and afternoon tea in the buffet upstairs concluded an enjoyable hour or so. Savage Ciub Ladies' Evening. The ladies' evening of the Wellington Savage Club promises to ho a great success, tho demand for tickets having beaten all previous years, and it is anticipated that tho club will bo m a position to hand over a substantial sum lo both the Christmas Gift Fund and tho War Relief Association. A lino programme'has been arranged, including a trench concert, for tho second half, bringing in some' very nne chorus work and much humour. Tho bpx plan is nftw open at the Bristol to the general public. From two little girls, the Misses Prico and Meade, the Mayoress (Tirs. J. P. Luke) has received' the sum of los., tho result of a sale in aid of tho Christmas'.Pudding Fund. Mrs. Luke is anxious to provide the nurses at l'rentham, sopie of whom are musical, with a piano. Slio has reecived a few subscriptions for this object, but would be veryglad to receivo more. Tho Mayoress of Karori (Mrs. B. G. H. Bum) has forwarded to the Mayoress of Wellington (Mrs. J. P. Luke) for" transmission to the proper quarters, two cases of clothing from tho ladies of Karori for tho dependants of the men who lost their iivos in the 'Jutland naval battle. The matron of. the Featherston Military Hospital acknowledges gifts from the following-Liverpool. Equipment Committee, Masterton, I case of books, eggs, jam, fruit, butter, and cakes] Airs. Eastham entertained a number of friends at the' Hataitai Bowling Pavilion, in honour of their.daughter's birthday, there beings a good number of young people present. Dancing was the favourite form of amusement. Guests present included: Mrs. Speedy and Miss O'Ncil (Auckland), Mrs._and Miss Cracroft, Mrs. and Miss Shepherd, Miss A. Hardie, M'C'aul, Salck, Gardner, Speedy, and Shepherd. A Farewell soldiers' Party, . A number of Victoria Hospital and ox-Hospital soldiers gavo Mrs. S. Hempton a "surprise" evening at her home in Thompson Street, as a farewell. Sho is leaving for S.vdnoy on October 5 with licr»little daughter, and will probably bo away six months. During tho evening Sergeant M'lntosh, in a suitable speech, presented _ Mrs. Hempton with a large leather suit-case, as a mark of esteem for her kindness to them in Hospital, giving them parties and looking after tliem generally. The evening came to a close with the soldiers and their girl friends singing ."For She's a Jolly Good Fellow," and giving three lusty cheers. _ Mrs. Hempton thanked them for their kind' thosglit. which she appreciated very much. She also said that they, had chosen tho, night wisely, as it happened to be lic'r birthday. Mrs. Luke will be very glad, to .receive inoro' petrol cases for the packing of tho Christinas gifts, and she and her committee .will bo very- glad of assistance from carpenters who would be willing to give up a little time after hours in altering the_ eases already received to a more suitable size. - Not all can have .gone to tho war, and this is ono of tho ways in which they, can do something for "tho men who have gone. -Mrs. Luko would like to thank Messrs. Cook and Cook, of Petono,for a gift of twenty-five new cases made just the right sizo for tho packing of the Christmas parcels. They were a most welcome gift In the circumstances. •Mrs. Robin Deck, daughlcr-in-law of Surgeon-Major Deck, who is in; charge of.Victoria Military Hospital, is leaving for England to-morrow. Lieutenant JR. Deck was killed at Gallipoli, and Mrs. Deck intends to offer' her services at Home lor war work. Sho would bo very pleased to personally convey any messages irom relatives of soldiers in New Zealand to thoso men in Walton-on-Tliaiiies or Brockonhurst, as sho will be visiting both. In addition to this, Mrs. Deck will .undertake to write to any relatives who give her an address, reporting as to tho condition of any particular soldier. Anyone wishing to avail thcmselvos of this kind offer before to-morrow (Thursday) should call upon Mrs. Deck "at her residence, 242 Tmakori Road, or write at once.
