CONCERT AND CARNIVAL
AT BOYS' INSTITUTE TEPIDBATHS. It only needed' a floating orchestra playing Handel's "Water Music" to encompass the glamour of a real oldtime water carnival at the Boys' Institute last evening. Tie occasion was a concert and water-sports given to assist the Institute to lighten the load of debt on the tepid baths. Mr. Geo. Troup, who presided, "said that they did not propose to sit dbivn and whine, but intended with, such carnivals and the help vof the City Council to make a good asset out of a bad one. The affair attracted a large audience, all the accommodation for visitors being comfortably occupied. The concort, which was held in tho baths, was quito an enjoyable one. After a selection by tho Mission Band 1 , Mr. Hugh Wright's resonant baritone was heard in the fine song, "Friend of Mine," and '.'Keep On." Miss Gladys Watkins sang "Joy Bells," and Miss Margaret Jones "'Hero's a Land" - and "The Laddie in Khaki." • Mr. George Peek san§ comic songs, to the immense delight of the younger section of the audience, and Mr. Hamilton Hodges sang a finely dramatic version of "The Wreck of the Hesperus," which ho declaimed „.witli characteristic force. His encore' song was "Annie Latorie." Topical vorses on the war spirit, entitled "Tommy," were recited by Miss Janie Petrie, who was also I recalled. Mr. Chas. Kerry played the accompaniments. The second part of the programme appertained to 'swimming and lifesaving. Tho life-saving demonstration, in which the various ways of rescuing drowning persons was _ illustrated, was given by three pairs of girls at one end 1 of the baths, and three male doubles at tho other end, and proved most interesting to spectators. The results 'of the water sports were as follow: — Boys' Institute Haudicap (33$ yards). —W. Hanley, 1; C. llustorholz, 2; L. Barker, 3. Ladies' diving competition (seaJed handicap).—Miss M. M'Lean, 1; iliss J. Aiken, 2; Miss M. Allan, 3. Ladies' handicap (free style), 33 i ■yards.—Miss D. Donnelly, 1 j Miss E. Buckmaster, 2. Primary schoolboys' teams race (four in team), 133 .yards.—Clyde Quay, 1; Mount Cook (A team), 2; Banks' College, 3. . During the evening Mr. T. Shields played tho duck in a dnck-hunfc, and Sir. Lansdowno, attired as a clown, caused endless amusement. CEREBRO MENINGITIS and other malignant germs are driven out of tho system by Fluenzoi (1/6 2/6). A per* feet irrigant for disinfecting the nasal cavity, the miorobes stronghold. Five carriages will be sold by public auction by Messrs. A. L. Wilson and Co. at tho Cambridge Hotel stables on Friday afternoon. Farmors in tho Manawatu district ato advised elsewhere in this issue that on and after Tuesday, October 10, stock sales at Levin will be held on Tuesday of each week. Commencing on October 4, tho monthly sales at Waikunae, To Horo, Otaki, anil Shannon will l>e held on Wednesday. Tho contents cf Mr. F.
