BRILLIANT STROKES BY THE ITALIANS
• The news from the Western theatro to-day is still echoing with the brilliant achievements by the British on the Somme, whore fresh gains are reported to have still further improved our position. Thrilling stories are told of the work of the new field motor dreadnought in battle—variously called the "tank," the "juggernaut," the "Creme-de-Menthe,' J and the "Willie." Its exploits read like a story by Jules Verne. Successful operations are also reported from the French front on the Somme, while the air squadrons have had a, busy and destructive day with the enemy's supply depots, ammunition dumps and lines of communication. 'Activity is reported on the Russian front in the Pinsk region, while there is brief mention of successful operations in the Holiez region. From the Italian front comes an interesting account of the manner in which our Allies prepared for their latest blow on the Carso, 'and tils part played by the Alpini is graphically told in the story of their exploit, in scaling an apparently impossible height. There is general activity on all fronts in the Balkans. The new Greek Cabinet is reported to be, in the majority, strongly anti-Venizelist, which means that Greek participation in the war has onco again been shelved. The full story of Greek trcachery, coupled with German trickery, at Kavala is told in dispatches from Volo. The Allies, in a Note, have presented a plain statement of unfair treatment at tho hands of Sweden, which, it is shown, haE( evinced a pro-German bias. To this Sweden has replied in acrimonious terms. • ■ ' {
