LIEBKNECHT APPEAL DISMISSED
SENTENCE INCREASED
SOCIALISTS ANGRY
(EcuteT/S Telesrum.) Amsterdam, August 24. The Supreme Court-Martial in Berlin has .dismissed Herr Liebkhecht's appeal against his sentence of two years and a half penal servitude for war treason. The Court increased tho sentence to four years and one month, and further deprived Herr Liobknecht of civil rights for six years. SOCIALIST DEMONSTRATIONS. Zealand Cablo Association. The Hague, August 24. Herr Liebknecht's sentence.-has crested a deep impression in Germany. The Socialists are indignant and are organising demonstrations for his release, despite tho military interdiction. !'?£[Herr, Liobknecht was charged with .•war treasony mi- offence involving a maximum sentence of fifteen years' penal servitude He is the famous leader of the Socialists in tho Reichstag,, and has several times been on the verge of serious trouble owing to , his protests against tho German war policy. On various occasions his speeches have led tot violent scenes in the Reichstag. He was arrested along with a number of demonstrators during 6ome May Day riota in Berlin. Although a soldier he was at tho time wearing civilian clothes. It was claimed by his friends ■ that his privii lege as a member exempted him from arrest, but the military claimed thai, be was "taken in the act." Ho is a man of enormous influence, and has been described. by various writers as "The Uncrowned King of Prussia." He is the Reichstag representative of Potsdam, of which the Kaiser is' the principal elector.]
