THE TURF

« ■■ GRAND NATIONAL MEETING LINCOLN STEEPLECHASE WON BY CAPTAIN MACKY QUEEN'S POST KILLED By Telegraph.—(Special Correspondent.) Christchurch, August 19. ■ The Canterbury Jockey Ciuo meeting concluded 10-day, in dud, cold weather. I'he truck was holding. Thero was a large attendance. Tno tutalisator handled ■£■19,31)7, uiakins; .£138,959 for the meeting, an increaio of XWi over last year's tig » res. , During the afternoon J. O'Shea was fined £10 lor breaking an engagement l;c ride. New York emmgud hands before tho start of the Lincoln Steeples, and now goes into S. Xrilford's Timaru stables. Awahou was also sold by Mr. Jas. M'Kelvio, of Bulb. Critic was favourite in the Aylesbury Steeples, with Nita aud lkowai also well fancied. The trio bad the finish to themselves, and alter Critic had indulged lkowai with the lead to the second fence from home, Keid then took him to the front, and he won easily, lkowai had to bo ridden out to boat Nita, and then came Kanpokonui, Fairy i'inn, and Precious Metal. Debonuaira and Traditor fell at the Kennel's double, and Otupai, who was very sore, at tho jump opposite the stand, while Uerekohu went out at Cutts' fence. The winner was subsequently purchased by Mr. F. Armstrong, of Akitio. Several of tho runners in the Heathcote Handicap had their chances highly assessed. Borke's Drift did not saddle up well, but Ringi'orm, Heeltap, and Battle Eve, bore a very fine appearance, and tho latter shaped well in the preliminary. At the start he led with Meltchikoff and Heeltap, but the latter was steadied, and, rounding the bend, Fabrikoff went out with a good lead. Battle Eve was in behind him entering tho straight, but he was soon done with, and Ringform shot out, only to give way to Heeltap over the last half-fur-long. Goldenlyte finished well in third place, and then came Meltiohikoff, Fabrikoff, Oxenhope, and Comely in that order. Cron Park, Compulsion, and Sabrenui were backed in that order for tho Hunters' Plate, which proved' tho best of good things for Compulsion,- who was better handled than the runner-up. Prenez Garde went off with a good break, but he tired to nothing after going six furlonss, and finished last. lungsway was prominent for a mile, but then the favourite took charge, and though Bill Terry ran up to bis quartere a furlong fiom home, he could not reduce the gap. Cron Park was a poor third. Most of the riders claimed 51b. allowances, and, judging by their efforts, they may be able to rank as "maidens" tor a'long time to come. In the Styx Hurdles Sleight-of-Hand was made the hottest order of the meeting, and he duly came home, with his head in his chest. Most of the runners fell, and one of them, Spectual, bumped his rider off when holding a commanding lead at Cutts*. The winner appears to be likely to take high rank amongst the hurdlers. This 'was his second win at the meeting. Master Regal was withdrawn from tho Sydenham Hurdles, and Golden March was made a slightly better favourite than Pursofiller, who to-day had F. Flynn in the saddle, while Crib was ridden by the light-weight J. Olsen. Tho two lastmentioned were unlucky, and should have run first and second. At the start Pursefiller was badly left. With half a mile gone Crib was in front, with Harbour Light and Tararu Jack, but the Timaru ihorse took off too far, and, stumbling, lost his position. Going past Cutis', Crib and Leonta got chopped back to last place, and the field was now piloted by Golden March, with Harbour Light and Pursefiller next. The latter rushed to the front at tho six-furlongs, and led till well down the straight, when Harbour Light joined her, and in a great finish, beat her by a head. Leonta was right up in third place, and then came Crib and Tararu Jack. Gladful fell at the second fence. The hard, race ho , had in tho National Hurdles must have got to tho bottom of Golden March, as ■ he did not run half the race he did on Thursday. A similar remark applies to Kilmeny. Leonta, who was dropped 91b. by the handicappei very nearly brought off a surprise. The Lincoln Steeplechase went to the little-fancied Captain Macky, who gave a good even exhibition of jumping, and won well. Tho favourite was Braeburn, but ho fenced badly, and this cost him tho race. Not one fence did he do well, and he stifled quit© a lot of them. At Cutts's, Queen's Post fell and broke her neck, and Idealism oame down over her. Merry Lad then took charge, and led Captain Macky, New York, and the favourite, but with a milo to go the Napier horse tired, and Captain Macky went on alone. After this hi 6 only trouble was to keep clear of Idealism, who had continued on in the Tace. Captain Macky was first over tho last fence, and won easily, while Lady Bibbero and Braeburn ran a dead heat for second place. Ngatoa, Merry Lad. and New York were the only others to finish. Bransfield lost his rider at the sod wall. Bravest and Fagot ran off, and Recharge fell. Lad, who started second favourite, is clearly not a second-day horse. The Redcliffs Handicap was contested by sixteen horses, ? and resulted in a -win for Varnish, who was under pressure for three furlongs, and then won comfortably from Fiery Cross and Sir Tarka, who had been prominent the whole way. Antwerp finished fourth after getting off badly. Bomb and Golden Prince were prominent to the turn, but failed to see out the last two furlongs. Tho time was two seconds faster than Heeltap ran earlier in the day over the same course. The winner is paddock-trained, and does most of his work with a shepherd on his back, but clearly this treatment benefits him. r > The Hawera-bred Encore, who had Oliver in the saddle, sjibceeded in downing a very hot order in the Selwyn Handicap. This -was the Gisborne back, War Tax, who had been promoted to open company. Backers went heavily for Deoley's mount, but he did not prove in tho same class as Encore, and after the latter had jumped out well and been knocked back to last place, he came on again in tho straight and defeated the favourite by a length. Ye 6 was a neck away in third place. Details of the racing aro:— AYLESBURY STEEPLECHASE,' or 200 sovs. About two miles and a half. 1 Mr. O. C. E. Brewer's blk. g.
