ADVANCE ON ELEVEN MILES OF FRONT
A SUCCESSFUL BLOW
FIGHTING IN THE BALKANS
BIG MOVE BEGINS FEESH SUCCESSES BY THE RUSSIANS To-day's news discloses another burst of .intense activity on the Sonime, culminating in a great battle on eleven miles of front, and a successful advanco of the Franco-British line over a substantial area of ground. Tho German official communique relating to the same engagement by comparison with the French and British accounts is a . desperate piece of fiction. Contemporaneously, the French, maintaining a vigorous offensive on the heights of the Mouse, have driven the enemy further back over the ground which was so dearly won in the heat of tho great German offensive earlier in tho year. Fleury is now in the hands of its rightful owners, while gains are also recorded on other sections of tho Verdun front. The situation at Gorizia and on / the Carso is unchanged. On tho Russian front the onomy has been severely handled on the Zlota Lip a front, in the Carpathians, and on tho Pripet front. A big move has commenced in the Balkans theatre. Fighting lias occurred at Fiorina, on the' Greek frontier, and both the Bulgars ana tho Germans in official communiques are explaining, for the enlightenment of neutrals and others, how it is that they have captured that place, while reports from Salonika assort that they have failed in their attempt to do so. The Greeks havo evacuated several villages in the Macedonian fighting zone, and tho Serbians, extended over several miles of front, have occupied them. General Sir Percy Lake (British Commander-ln'Chief in Mesopotamia) and General Gorfinge have been recalled. '
