JUNIOR CADET SYSTEM
SHOULD IT BE REVIVED? j In connection with tho death on | Saturday of Colonel Loveday, it is j curious to note that at the present j time there is a feeling among school- | masters and others that the Junior Cadet system, which was for some years j in charge of Colonel Loveday, should j he revived throughout New Zealand, as it was considered to be the groundwork in the making of a soldier, aud there were, thousands now in the fighting line who first learnt the rudiments of drill and arms when in the Junior Cadets, under the inspectors of the hranch department administered by Colonel Loveday. A proposal to revive the Junior Cadets was made by Mr. A. C. Maxwell at tho last meeting of the North Canterbury Public Schools Athletic Association. These cadets were disbanded when the Territorials came into existence. It was felt that the Educational Department's system of physical training would meet all the requirements, but.Mr. Maxwell stated at tho meeting that tho cadets' organisation was doing a great deal of good, and that, the gap caused by abolishing it had not been properly filled. Boys between 10 and 14 years of age were trainer! under the system, and it was stated, that tho majority of New Zealando.rs who fought on tho Gallipoli Peninsula were Junior Cadets in their younger days. Parents wore in favour of tho boys joining tho organisation, and, ho was sure, would be pleased if it was again established in the Dominion.
