Mr. Harold Smith, who is a candidate for Pahiatua in the National Government interest, opened his by-election campaign in Woodville last night, before a large and appreciative audience. The Mayor, presided. Before he commenced' an address on non-party lines, the candidate referred to the good qualities of tho late member, and enumcrv ated his own reasons for coming forward to contest the seat. After reading the text of the agreement between 1 the two largo parties in the House, ho 1 wont on to summarise the difficulties tho National Government had been 1 faced with and had overcome. He gave Ids own position regarding tho liquor question, declaring fo;- the bare< majority and the referendum. After questions had been answered a hearty vote ; of thanks was accorded the speaker." Ross addressed a meeting in the hall at Umutaroa- at midday on Tuesday, and received a vote of thanks and confidence. At Tereliunga on Tuesday evening a vote of thanks and confidence was also passed. Short addresses were also given during the day at Herctaunga and Kiritaki.
