PICTURES BY PERRETT

Mr. J. D. Perrett, the gifted Auckland artist, whoso clean, clever brushwork is well known in Wellington, is in Wellington with very attractive lot of liis oil colours, which are to be sold at auction by E. Johnston and Co., commencing at 1.30 p.m. to-morrow. Mr. Perrett is solidly established in favour for his faithful and well-selected pictures of scenic liaunts in New Zealand. A particularly desirable canvas that is worth good money is a familiar view of Mount Cook and tho foothills of Mount Sefton, painted from the site of the new Hermitage. This painting is notable for its strength and fibre, the artist having used the palette knife freely and successfully to get the desired effect. The rich dark browns and greens of .Governor's Bush are in strong contrast to the gleaming ice-slopes of the big mountain beyond. Another beautiful picture, with an idealistic .range' of colours, is "Harrison's Cove, Milford Sound," a piece of shadowy water, a dark mountain-side beyond, anil farther oil' a glimpse of the Mount Pembroke glacier, illumined by the rosy sunset tints, which are also faintly reflected in the waters of the Sound. "Diamond Lake" is a sound study from nature that no artistic eye can overlook, and "Showery Weather, West Coast," is a bit of breezy sea coast, fresh and exhilarating to the.eye. There is nice feeling, too, in "Evening on Lake Te A nan," and the artist's capacity in reflecting sunsets is skilfully shown in "Sunset on the Estuary, lnvercargill," "Sunseton Mount. Cook from Lake .Pukaki," and "The Path to the Lake," and "An Autumnal Sunset." Besides some thirty of his own paintings tliere are some notably good reproductions to be sold. The pictures will be on view to-day and from 7.30 o'clock to !) o'clock this evening! at Johnston and C'o.'s rooms.
