N OTES AND COMMENTS [Bt Glencoe.-] The South 'canterbury Hunt Club's meeting will take place on the Washdyke racecourse to-day. Amongst the runners are several horses who have engagements at the coming National Meeting. Acceptances for the big treble at the National Meeting and general entries closo on Friday of next week. Amongst the runners in the Hunt Club Cup at tho South Canterbury Hunt Club's Steeplechase Meeting to-day is Mawson. This hunter is by Euroclydon, and is stated to bo a liorso with a lot of promise. He is trained at Biccarton by F. D. Jones. Astrophel, the full brother to the Wollesley Stakes winner, Asterias, is in regular work at WoodviUo under J. Sullivan's care. Tho Finland colt is owned by Mr. W. H. Gaisford, a steward of the Woodville Jockey Club. The ex-Wellington trainer, J. Whitworth, who is now located at liandwick, turned out a winner at Warwick Farm this month, when lis two-year-old filly, Roman Queen (Charlemagne ll—Majesty), won the Juvenile Handicap, for which she was a good favourite. Quarantine, who did a season at the stud at Dannevirke, was returned to his breeder, Sir Geo. Clifford last week. It is not decided where ho will stand next season. Tho southern jumper, lTeathorlea, with his stable companion, Caseshot, has already arrived at Biccarton to fulfil engagements at the National Meeting. Mr. J. B. Reid'fl three-year-old colt Kilboy, who showed such promising form last autumn, is bookod for Sydney by this week's boat. Tho son of Kilbroney claims several important engagements at the A.J.C. and V.K.C. spring meetings, including the Derbies. Mr. J. J. Craig, who died in Auckland last week, had a mild connection with racing. In tho autumn of 1910 he won the Great Northern Oaka with Sea Elf. He was .also a partner in tho deal when Multiform's brother, Monoforra, was purchased as a yearling for 1200gns. Waimai, the cTack northern candidate for the Grand National Steeplechase, was given a trial over the big schooling hurdles it. Ellerslie last week, and acquitted uimself creditably. ; He is expected to strip a much better horse next month At Biccarton than he did during the Auckland Winter Meeting. Tho Biccarton trainer, P. M'Grath, has decided to again spell Thrax, and the Martian gelding has been Bent ;homo to his owner's place at Little' River The steeplechaser Naupata was, owing to soreness, only able to race on one day *t Trentham. On his return home ho tras given a doso of physic, and has been put into the paddock for a few days. It is reported that Sir Agnes who won two races at Trentliam and looked a very likely proposition for the Winter Cup, is a doubtful starter. From a time jioint of view the gallop put uip by Sir Agnes on.the concluding day at Trentham worked out as good as the Winter Oats mile won by Ringform. As far as can be seen, no one of the horses which contested tho last Grand National Steeplechase will be runners in this year's event. There wore only four nominated, and they are all doubtful starters. Tho bloodstock of the Dominion is to bo further strengthened by the importation of Mountain Knight, who has been purchased from Mr. E. J. Watt by Mr. W. J. Douglas, of Te Mohanga. The stallion named will-take up stud duty during the coming season, and such a fashionably bred she should not want for patronage from owners of thoroughbred mares. , The prominent English jockey. E. Lancaster, recently appealed to tho tribunal ngainst service in tho army. His grounds for so doing was that the army service would so increase his weight as to Tuin his career in the saddle. The plea failed, and Lancaster will have to oerve. TAPANUI RACING CLUB. PERMISSION TO USE WINGATUI REFUSED. By Telegraph—J'res3 Association. Dunedin, July 19.
