RAIDS ON THE GERMAN TRENCHES . MAORIS IN ACTION A PRIVATE'S HEROISM (Special llispatch from tha New Zealand Correspondent, iliCMalcolm Ross.) . - July 17. With varying success, the New Zealanders continue their raids on . tho enemy's trenches in the .of Armentieres. A German eoUntor-raid caused several casualties, mainly during the enemy's preliminary bombardment. One moeliine-gun crew was casualtied, and buried with the gun, but tlie gun was dug-out' and brought into action again. A recent attempted raid by the Maoris wis unsuccessful, but they cleverly outwitted a ruso by tlio enemy to entrap them, and returned without casualties. I'ho Germans concerned were caught in the open'by our guns and rifle fire, and thrown into confusion, suffering loss.
A party from the Rifle Brigade successfully raided the German front • trench, inflicting casualties; Our bombardment wrecked their trenches, and their dead wero badly shattered. Onr casualties were slight. " The Otago Regiment was less lucky, being caught by tho enemy's fire in- No-Man's-Laud, but the splendid bravery of the officers and men mado amends. Captain'.Tolly was wounded, and refused to go oil . a stretcher while his, men wero needing attention. Witli great gallantry lis carried on, and was subsequently killed. His body was located at dawn, near our parapet, and brought in under darkness next night. ■ 1 A private, who was under* a suspended pentcnco of fivo years' penal servitudc, behaveitj with'great heroism. He was seen boldly standing up under a heavy fire, repeatedly lifting wounded men oyer the parapet. His sentence was remitted.
