Mr. H. D. Heather, chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, has been appointed Acting-Consul for Japan at Auckland. The death is announced from Dunedin of Dr. William Brown, tho cause being heart failure. Dr, Brown some years ago was chairman of tho Otago Education Board, and latterly was an active member of tho Otago Patriotic Association. An old colonist, Mr. William Sowman, died in Blenheim on AVcdncsday. The deceased, who was 75 yoars of ago, was born in Suffolk, England, and with -his parents came out to Now Zealand in 1553, landing at Lytlolton from tho ship Canterbury. Mr. Thomas Sowman, of Blenheim, Mr. Leonard Sowman, and Mrs. W. Welsh,,of Wellington, aro mombcra of his family. Messrs. J. M. Jefferson and P. M. Mackay have been eleoted to represent the Auckland district on tho New Zealand Pharmacy Board. A very old resident of tho Ashbifi'ton County, Mr. John Corbott, died at his residence, Burnett Street, Asbburton, on Thursday morning, at the ago of sey-cnty-fou'r years. Mr. Corbett landed in Canterbury fifty-four years ago, and followed farming pursuits in tho Selwyn. district. Thirty-eight years ago he acquired land in the Wakanui district, which ho farmed successfully until five years ago, when ho went to reside in Ashburton. Councillor J. W. List has resigned his seat on the Petono Borough Council. The Rev. E. R. Novill has received advice of his appointment by tho Cathedral Chapter as sub-dean and honorary canon of St. Paul's, Dunedin. Mr. A. Worsley, who recently resigned from the position of assistant organist of tho Christchurch Cathedral, was, on Thursday night, mot by the choir boys. The Rev. E. H. Shore, on behalf of tho boys, presented Mr. Worsley with a gold mounted' fountain-pen, suitably inscribed. Mr. T. Pyke,.son of Mr. J.'T. Pyke, of Temuka, has been notified of his transfer, on promotion, from the Tourist Department, Dunedin, to the Public Trust Office, Hawera. Mr. Albert N. Watson, formerly of tho Dunedin and Port Chalmers brandies of the National Bank, has been transferred to the Christchurch branch. _ Mr. Watson is well known in Dunedin theatrical circles. Mr. Harvey J. Brunt, Postal Department, Christchurch,. has been advised that he is temporarily transferred to the Wellington office. Mr. F. W. Simms, of tho Meteorological Office, has resigned his position with the intention of resuming maritime work. Ho has been connected with the office for nine and a half years, first under the lato Captain Edwin and then under Mr. D. C. Bates. He was ; entertained by tho office staff and presented with an aneroid barometer. Tho members of the "Mother Goose" Pantomime Company left for Hawera by special train at widnight last night. Mr. Edgar Warwick, who was the proprietor of and principal comedian in the Court Cards, i 3 travelling through New Zealand with tho "Mother Goose" Pantomime Company. His wife (Miss Maud Fane) is the principal girl. At tho conclusion of the pantomime tour, Mr. and Mrs. Warwick are to appear in musical comedy under tho Williamson management. Mr. Frank Graham, of Dunedin, who is to sing the tenor rolo in "Faust" .with tho Wellington Choral Union tomorrow evening, arrived from the south yesterday morning. Miss Elsy Treweok, who is to sing tho music of Marguerite, will arrive from Sydney this morning by the Rivcrina.
