FOOD AND WAR QUESTIONS
STATE CONTROL OF SHIPPING By Tdeiraph-Prcss Assooialion-Copyritrht London, June 30. A mooting of 600 delegates, representing three million unionists, over which Mr. Gosling presided, discussed.tho dearness of food and fuel, and passed a resolution by 1,516,000 to 1,269,000, in .favour of Government ownership of all merchant shipping. The meeting also. resolved that tho holding up of stocks of food and fuel by buyers and sellers should bo declared illegal, and defaulters be subject to heavy ponalties. The delegates also demanded an increase of liO per cent, in old age pensions during ihe period high' prices are maintained. The Congress passed a resolution against tho Military Service Act being used for industrial • conscription, and called upon the Government to deal with tho grave menace to industrial labour. ■ An amendment pledging the Congress to endeavour to secure tho repeal of tho Act was nogatived by a threefold majority. . Other resolutions asked for the imposition of a war tax on personal wealth, and- requested tho Government to instruct tho military not to send anyone under 20 to the front.
