(the Italian Commander-in-Chief) formed an ontirely new army behind the Italian line in tho Trentino sector, in order to break the Austrian offensive. General Cadorna anticipated an Austrian attack, but could not believe that the enemy would commit the colossal blunder of greatly weakening his Russian front. When the Austrians' general offensive commenced, General Cadorna judged its probable extent, and chose a line to which ho could fall back with the minimum loss. He addressed tho troops, saying: "Remember! Here you must defend your Fatherland's soil and tho lionour of our army. These positions must be defended to the death." General Cadorna then conceived the idea of forming a new army. Six hours later, troops from all parts of the front began to march to a given point. The railways worked splendidly, surpassing their estimated potentiality by 25 per cent. Half a million men, ono hundred thousand' horses, and fifteen thousand carts were transported with lightning speed towards the Yicenzn Plain, and the army was ready for battle within twelve days. In the meantime tho defensive organisations wero completed, and the Austrians definitely checked. General Cadorna, on June 2, gave his new army tho order for the counter- : offensive. Roads, bridges, and light railways had been specially built, and mi i artificial lake constructed as a watering base for the troops. GREAT PRO-WAR DEMONSTRATIONS IN PARLIAMENT Rome, Juno SO.
