HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL
There were present at last evening's meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council the Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) and Councillors Hodgins, Meldrum, Brassel, Carver,' Clendon,, M'Dougall, Heron, Ball,' and Hobbs. Tho Under-Secretary of the Department of Justice advised that the renovation of the Police Station and -the sanitai'y conveniences at the Courthouse would be looked into,' The secretary of the Hutt Football Club asked for, the use of the-recreation ground and room,"on two or three evenings per, week, and the requost was granted, sub-:' ject to proper supervision. It was decided to obtain a legal opinion in respect to the.'proposed adjustment oi boundary'line between' Lots 18 and 19, Alice Street. The Wellington City Solicitor forwarded a memorandum of transfer of land comprised in the Gracefield Road connecting Hiitt Road and Lowry Bay, for the council's execution. It was decided not-to complete, execution until tho council's terms had been complied with. Various local bodies advised the appointment of representatives to the.' proposed conference re hospital and charitable aid matters. The following remits are to be forwarded by the council: "That the Government subsidy to the Hospital and ' Charitable Aid Board be 20s.' in the £; that the Government subsidy to the sanatorium be 245. in the £; that the Government subsidise all hospital and charitable boards 30s. in the £ for capital expenditure; that the State take over the control and maintain all indigent children." Councillor M'Dougall, as a delegate to the conference, raised the question of nationalisation, stating that he/ would support it unless directed otherwise by the council. Councillor Ball supported nationalisation. After some discussion it was decided to allow delegates a free hand in this matter: An offer was made of a boat for the use of wounded soldiers at, Lowry Bay if the council would effect'' certain repairs to same. It was decided •to obtain an estimate of the cost "from the engineer. The Mayor stated that it would be necessary to make a small increase in the rates this year, which would amount to Id. in the £ over last year's. This, however, (added Mr. Baldwin) compared favourably with other boroughs, and he reminded councillors of the Hutt Road levy of ,£IIIO, and he believed that iu the circumstances the incrcaso was justified.
