North Otago, and happily of infrequent occurrence elsewhere in the Dominion, hns made its appearance amongst throe North Otago herds, namely, actinomycosis, commonly _ known as "lumpy jaw" (reports tlio Oamaru '"Mail"). There are fifteen cases in these-herdsy bulls and cows being tho animals affected, iand both have for some time been under tho observation of Mr. F. W. Blair, tlio local stock inspector. .Last; week tho veterinary officers from Dtmedin, Gore, Invercargill, ■and Amberley made a visit to the farms. Tho affliction is a. ray fungus, -which ■attacks firstly the bone of tho jaw, caus-. fin* the excrescences which give it the name of "lumpy jaw." If not checked, -the disease Spreads into other parts of /tho body, being noticeable in the lungs in tho form of yellow spots. The' affected beasts, are being treated with the prescribed medicine, but,-as this is very ex"pensive,- another course would probably rbe followed in killing tho animals, were they not valuable.
