THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

IBr Giencoe.l

The Hawke's Bay sportsman, Mr. F. Armstrong, is at present on a visit to Wellington. He is down to meet the remains of his late trainer, A. Goodwin, whose body is arriving by the' incoming Melbourne boat. Tho winter meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club will take place on Priday ami Saturday. There will bo a number of horse 3 competing who did not sport silk- at Napier.

A. Oliver came from Napier, yesterday, and has entered a private hospital, where he is to'undergo an operation for an internal trouble.

The Welkin colt Three Is now back at Cauifield. In future he will bo trained by M. T. M'Grath, who was recently re. licensed by the Victorian Racing Club.

G. Scobie, who is well known in tho Dominion, had a bad fall off Lord Grey at Cauifield, and is at present in a private hospital in Melbourne.

Two stallions that made great names for themselves at the stud in America died last month. On was Meddler (St. Gaticn—Busybody), who died at Mr. H. Mackay's stud farm in Normandy, France; and tho other Ornament (Order —Victorine), whose death took placo at Lexington at the age of 22. Meddler, who was bred in England by Mr. Abmg. ton B'aird in 1890, was a first-class racehorse, and in tho United States from 1897 to 1914 inclusive his- stock won 384 races of the value of .£186,500. The most his stock won in America in one season was £•40,000 in ISO 4. He also beaded the list with something over £30,000 in 1906. Ornament, too,.in addition to being a successful sire, was a great racohorse. Bronsfield, winner of tho Petano Hack Steeplechase at- Napier Park, is. only a novice over country, so that his performance was creditable. When racing on the flat ho iras only a moderate performer, but last month, at AVanganui, he won the Rata Hack Hurdlo Handicap, beating a fair field. Tho reason why tho New Zealand mare Piirsefillor appeared as an. acceptor for the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdlo Raco is probably due to her connections overlooking tho fact that to ensure her, omission from the race in question it was necessary to actually make tho drawal. This procedure was evidently overlooked by Pursefillcr's owner. ■ Cheloma, who acted as runner-up to Otara in tho Settlers' Back Handicap at Napier,' is an English-bredv filly,, by Llangwyn; and is owned by Mr.. W. tr. Stead. Considering that it was her first race in public, tho imported filly did very well,' and should improve on thatform shortly. Prominent amongst tno entries for tho flat events at Trentham is tho Choke, bore pair, Plying Start and Battle Lve. Tho first-named is meeting anything but a good lot in the Parliamentary Handi. cap, and the publication of the weights next week may find him- at tho top of the handicap.

Taken as a whole, the entries received for the winter meeting of the Welling, ton Racing Club are .satisfactory. Tho jumping', events hare filled well, but the bi" handicaps have, not drawn a good lot In this respect' the position is much, the same.as it was twelve ..months ago. Kopu, who has been of? the scene for a considerable time, and has. done several seasons at tho stud, mado his. reaupear. once at Napier on Friday. He.stripped well,-but had heavy bandages on his front legs, and was very lame oh pulling up after the Stewards' Handicap. ■,

Braebiirn is now getting up in the weights in steeplechases, and tho bi| Laddo' gelding is ,np against a-very stifi proposition.to carry'l2st. 41b: successful-, ly in the Hawke's- Bay Steeplechase. Tho Sir Laddo gelding is not the build of a weight-carrier, and.lit will bo< no. snrpriso- to find him failing at Hastings. According to a Press Association message from Sydney last night the weather ■>enerally was dull for the holiday. Rain caused the postponement'of tho Adelaide races. . •.:■',.
