THAT BONUS TO CIVIL SERVANTS.
Sir,—l hiive been greatly surprised, at there being no protest in your editorial columns at the proposal (as contained in the War Budget) to give a bonus of 10 per cent, to Civil Servants, including school teachers. It is an iniquitous proposal. The wharf lumper, the navvy, the casual hard-working labourer, and the poor struggling toiler are all to be exploited for the benefit of the Civil Servants. The latter are to be asked out of their scanty earnings to contribute 2s. in every pound to a class who, on the whole, are on a good wicket. Do Civil Servants grudge working a bit harder while the war is on?. Are they the only persons who have to pay the increased cost of livingf I sincerely ho:pe there will be a serious attempt in Parlia.raent to prevent an injustice being done 'to those who are not so fortunate as to come under the heading of "C ; vil" Servants. I believe some of the school teachers are already planning what they will do with the extra ten per cent., which is to come largely out of the pockets of the struggling class, who are, of course, not usually termed Civil Servants.—l am, etc., NOT SELECT FEW.
