CAMPS AND THE MEN
A HOME SERVICE MEDAL GENERAL NOTES It is expected that an official announcement will be made shortly regarding the issue of a medal for distinguished services by members of the Defence Forces stationed in New Zealand. Such a medal would have to bo authorised by the Imperial Government and would bo awarded to officers and men of tho Homo Forces in Great Britain and other parts of the Empire, as well as in New Zealand. Part of the Machine. At Trentham Camp gates there are two sentries, one inside the main gates and the other at tho entrance to the racecourse stables and training" quarters, which are now used, in part, by tho Camp Medical Staff. This second sentry has puzzlod a number of visitors to the enmp. One of these asked a soldier of a mechanical turn of mind, what the second sentry was. "Oh," was the reply, ''he's a spare part, in case tho other fellow breaks down, y' know." Method of Winding Puttees. The Australian military authorities recently issued an order that all soldiers' puttees must be wound round the leg downwards from the knee and tied at the ankle. This order was prompted by the fact that some branches of the Service wound them upwards from the ankle, and others downward from the knee. In the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces the Artillery, Infantry, and A.S.C. wind their puttees from the knee to the ankle, so that the freo edge of each turn of the puttee is upwards. This is done because' 1 ' these branches of the Army are often on horseback and the rubbing of the leg against the horse's side would soon drag the puttee awry, if wound upwards on tho leg. The Infantry, on tho other hand, wind the puttee from the ankle to the knee, with the free edge downward. This is said to 1)6 the more comfortable way as a support to the leg when marching, though the other style is held to look smarter, and perhaps for this reason has been adopted by the Commonwealth authorities.
