BRAVE BRITISH SAILORS

TO AID THEIR WIDOWS AND ORPHANS. A well-known Wellington business man called at Tnn Dominion Office last evening, and expressed the opiuion that a great opportunity was awaiting the Wellington public to do something, for the relief of the widows and orphans of Mie brave sailors of the British Navy who laid down their lives in last week's grent naval battle. His idea, shortly, is that a fund should be raised, every penny cf which should be remitted to Londonj no charges of any description being placed against tho contributions.

"Noticing that Mr. P. A. M'Hardy, of Palmerston North, lias donated ,£IOOO to this most worthy object," said the business mail in question. "I wonder will the "Wellington,,public rise to the occasion and realise the aptness of. Mr. M'Hardy's remark, 'What have we done that these gallant sailors should lay down their lives for us?' Will Wellington make the necessary move for the establishment of a fund, the entire collections to be handed over to the Government for transmission to the proper quarter—everyone connected with the fund to givo his or her assistance. fre, and absolutely no deductions to bo made from the collections? Surely there are a few large-minded pud generous men and women here who would givo their services gratuitously to carry out so desirable a project, and "if this <«'n bo arranged, I feel sure the public would respond in a worthy manner when once assured that every penny donated would duly reach its desired destination. X will, willingly assist, such a scheme as T have outlined, and trust that others may see their, way to take the matter up."'
