At the Lower Hutt District High School on 'WeAncstlay, Mr. W. J. Melody, a teacher, was presented with a handsome clock by the headmaster (Mr. A. N. At the Peipne Municipal Fire Station last evening members of the local brigade and their friends assembled to bid God-speed to Fireman D. Lepper, son of Superintendent Lepper, of tho Petope l'iro Brigade, wlio' has enlisted in the Mining and Tunnelling Corps. Councillor Forsyth, of the Petone. Fire Board, presided. A programme of son<rs, etc., ivas given. During the evening the guest (who is the third member of the Xepper family to enlist) was presented with a wristlet watch by the chairman, on behalf of the brigade.

Mr. S. M. Stone's resignation as a councillor wa6 accepted at last night's meeting of the Mimniar Borough Council. The Mayor (Mr. F. Townsend) asked Mr. Stone to reconsider his action, and pointed out that the council had power to grant liim three months' leave of absence. Replying, Mr. Stone said that he had been a member of the council for five years and ahnlf, and during that time he had only missed three meetings. He felt that it would not bo fair to the ratepayers if he. did not resign, because owing to having obtained another position in the firm ho represented, he would not bo able to attend any more meetings of the council in future. The Mayor paid a high tribute to the work Mr. Stone had done for tho borough, and his remarks were supported l>y Councillor Underwood and other councillors. Tt is the intention of the residents of the borough to tender Mr. Stone a complimentary concert ill. tho Miramar Town Hall shortly. ■
