FRUITLESS ASSAULTS ON FORT VAUX . SANGUINARY ENCOUNTER WITH THE GARRISON The High Commissioner reports:— . London, June 5, 3.55 p.m. "East ot' the Meuse the Germans con tinned their "attucks yesterday evening and night on our positions in the Vaux-Oamloup region. A T orth-cast of Port Vaux, 011 the slopes of the Frimen Wood, repeated attempts were completely stopped by tlie French fire. All the assaults which were directed on points between Fort Vau.t and Datnloup were equally broken. During the night ft sanguinary combat took place between the garrison of the fort and the enemy's troops, who managed to penetrate our position. Despite liquid flame being largely employed by the enemy, the French troops prevented the enemy's progress in the region,of Thianmont. At Douaumont, artillery fighting continues with extreme violence. "On the left bank of the Mouse there has been an intermittent bombardment. "In the Vosges an enemy coup-de-main west of C'arspnch made him possessor of three elements in a trench, but our counter-attack shortly afterwards drove him out." FRENCH OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE. (Rec.
