OTAKI RACES
GEOR6E WINS THE CDP.
(By Our Special Correspondent.) The opening day of tho Otaki ineoting was held in glorious weather, and bei'oro a very large assemblage of visitors. Generally speaking, backers fared badly, though all the winners were well backed. Not a single favourite scored, .but thp second choice of the public iwns successful in five races. The machine handled .£20,456, as against .£19,500 for tho samo day last year. The Cup went to the Porirua representative George, who won all tho way, and scorcd decisively. The locally-owned horso is probably better now than at any time during his career, and should score again during the winter season.
A big field of nineteen went to the post for the Maiden Race. They stood well at tho barrier, and got off at tho first attempt. Rio and Merry Andrew— the latter under a strong pull—led all the way, and in the straight tho Shan-non-owned horse forged ahead, and won easily. Rio, who 'is by Signor from that good mare Spring, ran well enough td suggest an early victory for him. Sir Musketry came oh well at the finish, and so did T'eka, who weighed in for fourth place. Tho latter is one of 11. Gooseman's team, and is by Mystification from Tattle. Westella ■ and Montalvo did best of the others,
Golden Grafton won the Flying Hack on her merits, and would havo been very unlucky to have been beaten, as she got stopped at the. three furlongs, and her rider had to pull her round the field. When-a furloilg had been covered, Limpet and Hymen were aheaw of a bunched field, with Rewa. Rewa prominent. The latter got badly A stopped, and in going back interfered with Golden Grafton. Limpet was first into the straight, but in the run home Lady Black overhauled her, aird just as the last-named looked like winning. Golden Grafton got up on the outer side, and won by a head. Trickery was close up, and then came Limpet, Camp Kettle, and Hymen, i There were eight runners in the Steeplechase, which was an interesting race. Kirkby went off with a big lead, but at the,end of a.mile he tired, and Paremata and Wirokino took charge. They remained together in front till the last fence; when Paremata forged ahead, and won nicely. AVirokino was well clear of Kirkßy, and then came Darby Paul, who was running on at the finish. Kauwairoa and Nita were the next to finish. The latter failed badly, and jumped too high all the way. She was very lame qn pulling up. Keynote and Parewanui fell.
Kooya was the best backed in the Raukawa Cup, but after a-good run on the fence the whole way the best she could do was to finish fourth. After an even start, Bradamante led Kooya'and George, but the last-named was in charge passing the stand the first time. Down the back the Field . Battery gelding was bounding along at the head of a bunched field, which was whipped by Square Deal. Entering . the straight, ICooya ran through, but the leader was full of running, and won easily from Lady Louisa, who ran a good race, and Bradamante. The next .to finish was 'Kooya, Gold Soult, Rewi Poto, and Roumania. Taringamutu was prominent for a mile, but failed to seo it out.
Afavourite in Maid o' Gowrie prevailed in the mile hack, in which she reversed the Wangamii running with Cello. The latter had a very bad run, arid will do better next time. Maid o' Gowrie was ridden in behind for two furlongs, when she was taken to the front, and from here was not again headed. Pall Mall was always in the front rank, and in the end outstayed Paraoa. Ballyhar was another that was prominent the .whole way, and'finished fourt'E, alongside of Paraoa.
_ An unfunded horse in' Veto turned up in the Rahui Handicap, and/ iron very decisively. \ At the start Tirana led from Moutoa Queen, with Depredation at the head of.the others. The latter was a good favourite, but a bad run spoilt any chance he had. Veto took charge on the bend, and woe by throe, lengths. Moutoa Queen was a length in front of Tirana, and then in. a bunch came Ohiwai, Hushabye, Step, Mount. Victoria, and Sedd-el-Bahr. Of the unplaced division, Step showed up tho best. Depredation's rider caught tho tapes as .they lifted, and was badly cut about tho face. Several of the runners in the concluding event were well supported, but Kukri, who hails from Porirua, was tha nbsolute favourite. ; It was a great fin. Ki tietween Mann, Cherry Blossom, and Kukri, and heads only separated'them at the finish. Manu, who seemed to go well in tho mud, was early in charge, and led Cherry Blossom- by several lengths, whilo the latter was showing clear of the others, who were headed by C'rown Imperial 11. .Kukri moved up at the entrance to tho straight, but after a good finish was beaten by a narrow inargin.
