The loss of a sailor, stormy weather, and grounding on a reef were three of the incidents which occurred during the voyage of the steamer Waitemata, which arrived at Auckland from Calcutta, Singapore, and Samarahg on Wednesday evening. Prior to loading for the Dominion, tho Waitemata was engaged in carrying troops ana horses from New Zealand. She then went to Calcutta, and cargo was also taken on board at Singapore and Samarang. The lastnamed port was left on May 8, .and for the first few days the weather was fine. Oil May 17, when the vessel was near Torres Straits, shortly after noon, those on board felt two severe shocks, and the Waitemata came to a standstill. It was found' that she was hard.and fast on a reef. - There was little sea running at the time, and the vessel was in no danger. When -the tide rose seven hours later she tloatcd again, apparently having suffered no injury. On May 25 the wind rose from the south-east, and increased in violence until on May 27 it had developed into a strong gale, with very -heavy seas. When the gale was at its height tho cry of "Man overboard!" was heard on tho bridg-e by tho chief, officer, Mr. Bruce. He immediately ordered tho stopping of the engines and threw a lifebuoy overboard. Owing to the roughness of the weather, however, it was impossible to see the man in the water! and as it would have been impossible to attempt to lower a boat tho vesecl had to continue her voyage. The victim was a sailor named Murdoch M'Donald, a single man, and a native of Stornaway, Scotland. , ■ Captain' Nicolson'is in command of tho vessel; and he has with bim as officers:— Chief, Mr. J. Bruce; second, Mr. J. Dudcr; third, Mr. H. Milne; chief engineer, Mr. G. Skinner; second, Mr. J. • M'Conville; third, Mr. E. Protheroe; fourth, Mr. J. Henderson; electrician, Mr. G. Welsh; plumber, Mr. J.Fletcher; chief steward, Mr. J. Westbury: wireless operator, Mr. L. Lane. The big vessel is to leavo tho northern port to-night, and is expected here on Monday night. Australia. This German vessel sheltered at Loana, Portuguese West Africa at the outbreak of the war. The-fact that the.vessel is continuing its voyage, is due to Portugal commanaeerina; German interned vessels sheltering in Portuguese ports. It appears that the German c'reV made away with essential parts of the engines, but 'Sufficient temporary repairs were effected to, enable the vessel to proceed to Cane Town to permit of permanent repairs being made. - » - MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. - Mr. J'. J.--Smith, mate -of tho Awahou, has signed off. that vessel. Mr. R. Jacobson, third officer of the Kurow, has signed on-, the Kahika as second. ..■Mr. J. F.
