To-day's reports award the honours of the fighting to the French. The Germans here and there scored points, but their successes were short-lived, for the French counter-attacks readjusted the odds. The thrilling feature of the manysided battlo has been the brilliant assault by which the French regained nearly the whole of Fort Douauniont, and the story is graphically told'. Fighting on the Vimy heights, 011 the British front, continues, but there is no change in the situatyon. The story of the Austrian blow in the Trontirio is now told. If the report is to be believed, the Austrians had skil- . fully masked their concentration of mon and guns for the great effort, and a , terrific bombardment was tho first indication as to the direction .of the blow. The Kalians were taken off their guard, but the limit of the Austrian penetration is stated to hare been reached. From the Russian front in Europe there is no-news of major developments. A German attempt to get through in the region of the Pripet marshes was frustrated. The Compulsion Bill has passed the Brit ish House of Lords.
