Captain Barclay has informed His Worship the Mayor that 39 men enlisted on Saturday, and another 39 .Tester-, day, making the total to data 2934.
MEETING AT PETONE A meeting, convened by the Mayor of Petono (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) was held ■|n the local Council Chambers last evening, and was well attended. The Mayor said the question to be considered was the. best way to_get recruits. The subject- was 'exhaustively dealt with, various suggestions were offered, and eventually a strong committee was' set up to act in conjunction with the Municipal Recruiting Committee. A joint meeting of'these bodies is to be held shortly, and in the meantime the names of all local "cligibles" are to be noted, with a view to making a personal appeal -to them.: It was resolved to make the present preniises.used by the municipal gas department a recruiting office, and to pay more attention to the reor-uiting movemont generally. The fact that three recruits volunteered-for service during the evening shows that the proceedings were enthusiastic.
ROLL OF ELIGTBLES OF LITTLE * USE . By Telegraph.-Special Correspondent Napier, May 8. At to-day's County Council meeting the chairman, Mr. X. E. Crosse, said the Government-roll of eligibles for activo service was ;'"badly, prepared, and was of little use : in recruiting. /Hie council were going to appoint local committees to prepare, a roll of each locality, so that the recruiting officer would have: his work mado .as easy as possible. :
