MEETING OF SENATE

GRANTS TO COLLEGES

The business done at tho April meeting m Wellington of tho New Zealand University Senate lias been made public. There were present: The Chancellor, Sir Robert Stout (in the chair), the Yice-Cliancellor, Mr. J. C. Adams, Dr. W. J. Anderson, Rev. A. Professor Chilton, Hon. Dr. Collins Rev.' W. A. Evans, Mr. H. F. von Haast, Professor Hight, Professor Hunter, Professor Kirk, Professor Marshall, and Professor Scgar. The following assistant examiners for the Matriculation Examination were appointed: In Latin, Miss Lodder, B.A. (Auckland); in French, Mr. L. J. Dri Flou (Auckland). It was decided that the appointment of these examiners should be mado as a matter of emergency. It was resolved that ten Junior University Scholarships be offered for competition in 1916. A letter from Banks's Commercial College, Wellington, regarding history as a subject for tho entrance scholarships examination was referred to the Board of Studies. "Tho Sir .lulius von Haast prize was not awarded as no candidate had rruali-' fied for honours in geology. The Cook prize was not awarded, as there was no candidate for honours in mathematics. It was resolved that the result of the examination of a candidate for military science be recorded as a failure. Tho confidential reports of the examiners in England were allowed to bo sent to college councils. The matter of. the Standard Insurance Company's claim for premium on account of a fidelity bond was left in tho hands of the Chancellor. Tho announcement of the subject,for the Habeus prize, 1917, as slightly modified, was authorised. An application from a candidate, who had. gained honours in economics, for exemption from currency and banking, economics, and statistical method as for B.Com. was granted..

An application -was -received for exemption in subjects for the diploma of journalism in which tho. candidate had passed in qualifying for degrees. An invitation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to send a dele-gate-at the function in honour of the opening of the new building on June 14, 1916, was left in the hands of the Chancellor,' the Rev. E. Guthrie, M.A., 13.D., being suggested as delegate. In referenco to the point raised in the agent's roport -with ' regard to tho marking of answers in the case of candidates who answer moro than tho required number of questions, it was agreed that suggestions bo sent in as to the instructions to be given to candidates.

"-National Endowment Fund, Professor Hunter moved, and Mr. von Haast seconded, the following motion: That of the amount available out of tho National Endowment Fund 1 for distribution to tho colleges by the University one-fourth be granted to .each college as follows:— . • 1. To Auckland University College the 1 sum of £300 for carrying on the work of the Workers' Educational/Association and for university extension classes; and tho balanco for tho college library, the science laboratories, and the School of Architecture. ' 2. To Victoria University College the sum of £300 for carrying on the work of tho Workers' Educational Association and for university extension classes, and the balance for founding a of economics. 3. To Canterbury College tho sum of £300 for carrying on the work of the _ Workers' Educational Association and for university exten- ' sion classes, and tho balance for the college library. 4. To the University of Otago the sum of £300 for carrying on the work of tho Workers' Educational Association, for university extension classes, and the balance ; for the Chair of Economics and His- ■ tory, and for the library.
